$600 isn't a lot in the world of inventory, but it's YOUR starting inventory.
Make it Yours by ordering it yourself on intouch.
Ask for advice, but order it yourself.
It's very good practice, and drives home the point it's Your business and Your money you're spending. 
Don't load up on:
Color compacts
Eye colors
Cheek Colors
Lipsticks
Eyeliners
Let me be clear. Get what you need, just don't load up.
Drek on a shelf is drek on a shelf.

It's not just the eye pencils being discontinued!

Directly from the June Applause, pg. 26:

My ordering advice is to order only what you need now or will need in the next 2 - 3 weeks.  There are lots of changes being made and the new Look Book will be out in mid June featuring 4 different looks and some updated products.

I have also learned after 8 years with MK, rumors about products usually come to fruition.  There are some massive changes coming our way this year.   

Sounds like you have it worked out... I'm glad.  Just be careful and not let Mrs. Director make you feel guilty for not ordering more, more, more!!!  When I put in my initial order I had gone over the list of product and had my own order ready to roll... items that I thought made sense to have on hand... items that I had seen others purchase at classes I had either attended or hosted in the past.  I get to Mrs. Director's house to place my order and as we're placing the order on InTouch she kept saying, "One to show, one to sell," about all this crap I did not want!  I was too chicken to argue with her and let it all happen... although inside I was dying!  

I had a good laugh over Sassy's response above about all those Outliner Pencils... I'm right there with ya on that one, Sassy!!  I finally got rid of my very last one!!!  It only took 2 years!!  

So tomigyrl, just hang tough!!  YOU are the boss.  It's your $$$.  Take it slow and easy.  Don't worry about that 'free product' or saving on shipping charges.  I made all those mistakes way too many times and now have mega debt.  It ain't worth it.

OK....I am still a director....personally, I think anyone wanting to sell MK, must have some inventory to do it....$600 is plenty, especially if that is where you are comfortable.....and....you will get enough product bonus retail to cover the cost of your kit.  Personally, I would not allow your director to order for you.  They will order what they sell the most of, not what you will sell the most of.  Look at the things you love, because that is what you will tell everybody about.  Watch the lists of what is being discontinued and do not order those items.  Once they go on pink sale, you will get them for a much lower price.  You are smart to use your profit on this first order to get more inventory.  I did that too.  Since I didn't know what to order, I ordered a duplicate of what the orders already were, because I figured if they sold once, they will sell again or the person who bought it the first time will probably reorder when they are done.  Personally, I believe the rumors about the color line and would not order any compacts, other than the one I get free if it is within two weeks or 1 to show.  I would also not order anything that fits in a compact until rumors are laid to rest after seminar.  Soooo....no eyeshadows, blush, lipstick, gloss or compact foundation/powders.  If someone orders one, you can get it from another team member, and if your director tells you that you aren't allowed to do it...just ask a different team member, some of them are dying to get rid of some of their inventory.  The biggest thing is not to go into debt for MK, for any reason....make money only.  It is soooooo easy to become debt ridden!!!!  Never buy into the contests unless you are selling enough to compete in the contests....it is just not worth it!  Best of luck to you!

About the outliner pencils:  if you have some you want to move, promote them this way (a Robert Jones suggestion).  The outliner pencil is great for "filling in" small lines around the mouth and under the eyes.  If you use it in those areas first (by that I mean, after skin care, before foundation) you will be amazed at the difference.  You will see an improvement after you apply foundation.  I don't know what the average age is of the members of this board, but those of us over 40 (or 50!) DO have lines we want to minimize and the outliner pencil does that--much cheaper than the new Targeted Action pen too.  I love the new pen, but it IS pricey.  Try this with the outliners and you will move them.
