You can place your order yourself on InTouch or by phone. She does not have to have anything to do with your inventory activities. I placed my own orders from day one.

I have been ill since reading this yesterday -- and mostly sick at my lame response.  What I really wanted to say is this...

Mary Kay sucks.  The company sucks and the flopportunity sucks.  Period.  Read my story -- super seller until I ran through my network.  Then nothing.  And I worked my butt off...

Why does the company suck?  Just browse through here and read their letter to the FTC about proposed new regulations -- total crap.  They think we are idiots.

The turnover rate?  The slimy way they recruit?  They suck.

JEEZ LOUISE!!!

I've obviously not been paying enough attention around here, because suddenly we have tons of Mary Kay people here saying "You own your own business", "you can do this your OWN way", and "just order as much as you can afford".

UM.....NO!!!!!!
#1. You do NOT OWN A BUSINESS. Multi-level marketing is a hobby that costs money for most people. If you do not ALREADY have a bunch of people ready to buy your merchandise, do NOT buy any products. You cannot order inventory for customers you don't even have yet. And this does not include your mom, sister, and grandma that are going to buy a couple of items once in a while - that is not a BUSINESS.

#2. The rate of failure is close to 99%. Think about that before you decide that it's a worthwhile "business opportunity".

#3. Your senior wants you to buy this stuff because SHE NEEDS THE COMMISSION for her monthly production. You aren't going to get any real training in sales, and that's a guarantee.

I realize this is a "ban free" forum, so that MK people can sign up here in droves and give their crazy advice, but COME ON.

Multi-level marketing is a scam.
That is all.

tomigirl, please visit www.pinktruth.com, there may be similar stuff on here, but from what I'm seeing in these replies it's not.  You need to hear the truth about Mary Kay, take your time and search it out, because there is waaaaay more to it than your Sales Director will tell you.  MLM's are all the same on a basic level and to really make it big in MK, at the higher levels, you have to leave your ethics behind.  You won't see it right away, and those at the top certainly won't say it.  Don't fall for the pink lies!  You can always send your stuff back, even after a year.  There are much better ways to make extra money or have an enjoyable hobby without selling your soul to line someone else's pockets.  *stepping off my Soapbox now* Welcome, by the way, and keep us posted.  If I were you and you were dead set on ordering, I would have only ordered $599.99 just to piss her off!  Then she wouldn't make as much $$ off from you!  But I don't recommend giving any $$ to MKC at all, really.

Yes, PinkTruth is very anti-MLM and has some good information over there.

The only problem is that if you sign up for that forum, the site owner reads all your PMs (and all the transcripts and PMs in the chat room as well).

If you don't mind being spied on - then go ahead.

All of the information on Pinktruth can be found here, and also on other websites like www.mlm-thetruth.com, and www.quatloos.com to name a few.

And yes - multi-level marketing sucks.

I think the previous advice she was given is based on the fact that she said she's already sold $300+ and wants to order the $600. I wasn't advocating her going into debt (please see my response for more details) by any means. But, if she's already decided that's what she is going to do  (even though it was mentioned that she could just order what she needed when she needed to), then we can't stop her from not heeding that advice.

I know what you mean Sassy.

I just don't like to see people buying inventory at all, because here's what's going to happen:

New Recruit buys the $600. Maybe she sells a lot of it - maybe she can't. But sooner than later, she will have someone say "I want that redwood lipstick." And she doesn't have it.

If she can't find someone to trade with, she can't buy JUST the lipstick from MK. So what to do? Order another $200 worth of junk just to "get the discount"? (or pay $8.95 shipping for one lipstick?)

This is why people pressure you to start with a full $3600 (or more). The problem is if you buy the $3600, you might have that one redwood lipstick someone wants - but you're also gauranteed to have at least $2400 worth of crap you can't sell. (for example)

It is a LOSE -LOSE situation, no matter what.

The only way that it wouldn't be a bad deal, is if Mary Kay allowed consultants to order much smaller amounts (say, a lipstick or moisturizer) and still get the discount. None of this "you have to buy $200 per quarter or you don't get the discount" crap.

But they don't. Because they would lose a LOT of money if people could only order what they NEED.

I won't even get into the whole market saturation, recruiting-a-pyramid stuff here.

(this is not really aimed at you Sassy. Just trying to make a point why we need more education on this. ) People need to know this stuff before they even sign up with an MLM!

I didn't feel that you were referring directly to me, PC (we all go way back on PL ) I think it's important that they hear about the pitfalls of those initial inventory orders (which is why I went into detail about my initial order nightmare) and mentioned the trading board here (because you can get one listick and screw the $200 ws ordering b.s. for those who are still "actively working in" MK. That's part of how my inventory grew; there was always someone wanting something I didn't have and my director looked at you dirty if you traded product with people often. She was like "only in emergencies".  :holycow
