So I got suckered into opening a MK Chase Visa credit card to order inventory -- I plead temporary insanity :gah: Luckily it only had a $500 limit, so I couldn't do too much damage with that one. The other one I opened -- another Chase one at that, had a $1,500 limit *sigh* Fortunately, each card had a 0% APR for 12 months, so I don't feel so bad about carrying a balance and paying it down slowly.

Well, I finally made the decision to get out of MK. I had a checking account that was dedicated MK financials and decided to close the account. There was no real reason to keep it open, especially since it was costing my $6 a month to keep open since there wasn't $500+ in the account. One thing I forgot was that I had that checking account information stored along with my regular checking account, in the payment section on Chase's website. I use my regular checking for my other Visa and generally used MK checking for my MK Visa. I have had this card since July, actually both of them, and have paid more than the minimums on both of them on time every month. I set up a payment for my MK Visa, not even thinking about that closed account -- the payment ended up getting returned and I got hit with a $39 fee. Sucks yea, but it was my fault, so I sucked it up. BUT I turned around and made a payment from my regular checking account before it was due. I typically pay this card massively early, so even with the processing, return payment and reprocessing the payment was still on time by more than a week. End of story...

Not quite. About a week ago I go to make my payment and notice that there is a finance charge . . . to the tune of 29.9% -- GMAFB! Both accounts have been in good standing, I have good credit, and this was my FIRST offense, which I corrected in a very timely manner. I was PISSED. I called Chase customer service and complained. Told them that I currently have two cards with them that have been paid on time, more than minimums, never a problem. She came back and said even a first offense can result in changing the APR/etc and that there was nothing she could do. She was not showing a lower APR option for me and basically I was SOL. I was so ticked off -- I had another Chase credit card about 5 years ago, for like a year and a half, and they pulled almost the same stunt on me. I missed the first payment, because they never sent me the bill -- tough luck. Then about a year later my payment was like a day late and they jacked my rate to 29.9%. My other credit card (GM Mastercard -- LOVE THEM! Awesome customer service!) has a rate of 13.28%, that should tell you something about my credit/payment history . . . I closed my Chase account back then and vowed never to use them again. Then I got involved with MK :gah: talk about insult to injury. Anyways, long story short I told her how unhappy I was with Chase and their customer service. Told her that I will never be using the company again and to close out my account, I was done. So ridiculous! The good news is one credit card paid off tho! Once I get my blue check I'll have another one paid off and no more MK debt!!!

Moral of the story: Avoid Chase at all costs -- first opportunity they get, they will :hit8: you.

Most of the credit card companies are doing the same thing. You pay late once, your rate goes up. If you're late on other bills, not just theirs, they factor that in as well.

Just another opportunity to screw the consumer and get every last cent.

The moral of the story is that you have to be extra, extra vigilant and pay those credit card bills on time.

Sorry for the hassle and mess you experienced cloud!

UYC,

The sad thing is the card was paid on time, as were all of my other bills. It was closing that checking account that messed everything up -- they said one returned payment can raise your interest rate, even tho the payment was still made on time and the account was in good standing. I've heard a lot of negative things about Chase from other people as well, but you are definitely right -- got to be vigilant and extremely careful.

I guess its just another reminder to get away from credit . . . I'm just glad that the card is paid off and closed. It may affect my credit in the short term, but I don't plan on making any big purchases/loan arrangements in the next year.

There is a thread here about Dave Ramsey.  You should definitely read it!

I had the same Chase Credit card - I never had that sort of problem, but I am glad that account is closed after hearing your story!!!

I have had really good experiences with American Express.  Last year, my bank discontinued their e-statements with my AMEX account without notice.  I had set up my account to automatically pay when a new e-bill was received.  I was no longer receiving paper statements.  Well, I discovered this 2 days after the bill was due.

I called AMEX, and they marked my account as 'Statement never received.'  My APRs did not go up, and I was not charged late fees.  They were nice and VERY helpful.

Just my twocents!

PS - The bank has since re-established e-bills for that account... 6 months later.  GO FIGURE.

cloud...that's ridiculous!

I think all the CC companies and bank are getting crappier. Much more strict and tipping things even more in their favor and screwing the consumer.

UYC I think you're right.  They take advantage, because they know they can get away with it. We had 2 different cards with Chase one time and even though I made my payment on time and my card was below the limit, when they added the interest for the month it came out $.02 over the limit and they charged me $39 for being over the limit for 2 consecutive months.

The bill came out on the 29th of the month and then they charged me for the next month also.  I called to complain and they got really Sh...y and said TECHNICALLY they COULD charge me for being over even $.01.  When I asked to speak to the supervisor, they took both charges off.  Needless to say those cards were the first I paid off and I would never take any card from Chase again!

Fact is after I get all my MK debt paid off, I don't plan to ever use CC again, but even in an emergency I would never have a Chase card for this reason!

PPA- I freaking hate american express!!! I had two cards with them, a gold card and a blue card. We were traveling and they made ME call THEM before they would approve the "unusual" transaction. This happened twice on two different trips. They wanted me to tell them the name and adress of a family member that did not live with me, as proof of my identity. I said "no!" they said "well, that information is public record, so if I were "me" then I would know that info. I refused to give them SOMEONE ELSES info to verifly MY identity! Besides, my account was password protected, and they wouldn't take that!! I canceled my account the next week.
