Your MK Success has a Snowball's Chance in Hell

The last thread on here about the napkin and plates as a prize got me thinking about this.
What's the worst prize you ever received from your director (and/or MK)?
If you were a director, what was the worst prize you ever gave.
----------------------- For me, I got a lot of stinky prizes. The other directors in my area used to make fun of my Sr/NSD because of her horrific prizes. She had this scary as all get out prize closet in her office. It was huge and so unorganized. You opened it at your own risk. It was a big conglomeration of half used prizes and cheap crap she'd received as well. Every time we got a "prize" bag from her, we'd laugh and laugh at all the stupid stuff (fuzzy pencils, plastic rings, flip flops, you name it). And everyone's was different. We'd say "_____ cleaned out her prize closet again!"
I'm sure I gave some bad prizes. One I remember was sort of a nice prize, but bad. I had this sister director (whole back story for another time), but basically I'd done a ton of stuff on her behalf and gotten not so much as a thank you. Then, finally she sends me this Demdaco Angel. Which would have been nice, but it was regifted from our Sr. Apparently, she forgot that I was there at the specific event at which each of us was awarded one of those angels, and she sent me hers. I was so peeved. I hated the sight of the thing, and I ended up giving it to a consultant as a gift. It was at the end of my directorship at my "farewell, I quit" party for my unit. I guess I was cleaning out my prize closet as well. There, my sin is confessed!

At one of our unit meetings I was "queen of sales". (No really, I did sell some stuff.) Anyway, there were only 5 of us at that meeting so winning "queen of sales" was no biggie. Guess what terrific prize I got? A pack of Mary Kay Post-It Notes. Woo hoo!!! LMAO!!!

I got a couple. First was the pink ice ring, what a piece of crap! I also once got a pink penn that had fuzzy stuff glued on the end, you could tell it had been done with a glue gun. And it had fake gems glued to it also. very tacky. I took it home and my husband was like "what the h-ll is that?!" we promptly put it in the trash.

Luckyone, I had to laugh at that last part about your "Husband saying what the H"# ll is that. I can just picture him saying that to you. You know you'd think that they would be ashamed to even think about giving some of those gifts, I don't think that's the word I'm looking for (gifts). Well, I got the pink ring, I can't believe I fell for that, and the ribbon, so silly. I didn't get that much, the stuff I did get was me putting in orders, like the pink ring, the pink phone star prize, Barbie. candlegirl

I received some doozies, but mainly just some tacky jewelry that I wouldn't wear, or a million pins- but one thing that I received was this think necklace, a chain (nothing wrong w/ it by itself) and the unit I was a part of would give you these different beads based on your achievements, to go onto the chain. Some gold beads, some crystal ones, etc- but it all looked like something my grandma would wear- I mean, I would never wear a necklace liek that- not that I don't like beads, but not these beads, which looked like a nursing home activity time project - no offense to our elders- As far as what I gave??? Well, I had a basket full of things for weekly prizes- yes, stuff no one needed, but I also would put things in there like section 2 supplies- color 101 cards, packs of sales tickets, etc. Granted, they knew full well how much those things cost, but at least they could use them. For monthly prizes, it was usually jewelry- but I picked things that were modern, simple, sleek- occasionally had a wallet or bag- and they ranged from cheap, like a few bucks, to around $15 (still, that's pretty cheap)- but you can't go buying people $50 prizes--oh well. I tried, but nonethe less it was all stuff people really didn't need usually.

Because I never reached (and certainly won't be now) director status, I never gave prizes, but I did get some pretty crappy stuff. In addition to the dollar store stuff (or things that I had seen in the $1 bin at Target or Michael's) we got a ring for being an on-target Circle of Excellence unit. It was supposedly a really big deal and all the directors that saw it would freak out about it. In reality, it was a Tiffany knock-off that turned everyone's finger green in a couple days of wearing it. I was so embarrassed because my new recruit got hers her first week and it tarnished her finger! I ended up giving her a different ring (from the multitude I had) because I felt so bad! The other thing that I didn't win, but I thought was so crappy I didn't even attempt it was my National was having a contest for ordering (yes, ordering) $1,000 in the month of June (June - big surprise) or having one new qualified recruit (qualified is that magical $600 order) and you'd win these pink crystal earrings. That might not seem TOO bad, but I had just seen the earrings on www.thewhitneycollection.com for $7 and they were being discontinued! She couldn't even get something new and in style for us! Last one was the I Love Lipstick challenge from the company. Not sure how many of you remember this, but when the unit achieved the goal you got a party pack from corporate to celebrate. My director made a huge deal about it, "When something comes from corporate, they go all out and it's going to be great!" So our unit achieved the challenge and anticipated this pretty cool party and a nice prize from the company, and we got. . . drum roll please. . . bright pink feather boas and plastic bead necklaces! Wow, that was worth it!

OH, I earned every star prize that came out as well- I was a star like 11 or 12 times - but, in the last 2 months, I have sold all of my star prizes- pajamas, jewelry, desk sets, briefcases, plates, sweatshirts, sweathers, everything- In fact, I even sold my ladder of success pin w/ all of the little star jewels on it- someone bought that!! I laugh at the thought of someone wearing that, pretending they earned all of those stars-!!! Can you imagine?? (Well, bought all of those stars, however you want to see it!)

feather boas and necklaces from the company - that's pretty pathetic considering what they made off consultants for that promotion.
I sold my star ladders, too (I had two). I just can't imagine why someone would want that, and pretending they'd earned all those stars was all I could think of. If that doesn't show you the MK mindset, then I don't know what does! But hey, I suppose that's better than ordering all the product to get those stars (which I did!).
I think Sandy did this topic on her blog, and I loved her story about getting a Robert Jones facial, which she worked uber-hard for, and he only did one eye

I think the worst prize I ever received was "Dessert with your Director". We were to meet the directors from our team center for dessert. Mind you, this was AFTER meeting (so we're talking 9:30 by the time they show up). We're meeting at Starbucks - I don't drink coffee and really don't care for the smell. And the worst part? We had to pay for our own freakin' desserts!!!!! So it was like "here's your prize...oh and your bill..." She did that one other time for a "Star Night" - we were all going to dinner at this great Mexican place and we're all expecting that SHE's buying, right? Nope. We all got separate checks. Nice.

that's a typical "prize" - Dinner/Dessert/coffee with your director! And you're thinking the prize is the food, drink, or dessert...only to find out that the prize is really just being in the awesome presence of your director, and you buy your own refreshments. I've mentioned this before on my blog, but my worst prize was a star consultant prize in 2003 - it was the pink fleece jacket for an $1800 order. The first time I tried to put my hand through the sleeve, the lining tore completely away from the jacket. I was pissed.

Yeah, PC and anthonysmom- that's so true!!!
When I was in DIQ our unit had to do 10 chocolate marketing interviews to qualify for the chocolate night at a restaurant. Well, she DID pay for the dessert, but when I was a director we talked about that night later, and she told me she lost so much money on the event she would never do it again. She said, "you know, it should just be enough that they get to spend time with us and be in our space!" Sick
My worst prizes, beyond all the rings and charms that turned my fingers green, or course, were the notes of encouragement that I'd get from my senior that were written by her assistant (who happened to be her daughter!!!) How insulting- can't you even bother SIGNING it with your own hand!?!?!? Boo
I call that "working stupid"!

I usually did not turn in my paperwork to get the stupid prizes (even during diq). My sr. kept getting on to me, but I didn't really want the prize. When I was a dir. I let the consultants pick out of a basket - usually section 2, some non-mk stuff... I could not bring myself to offer much cheap jewelry. I asked those that came what they wanted for prizes. they were all pink too, so there was usually something they wanted. I actually did things very low key and kept my meetings geared a lot toward product knowledge. My sr. tried to get me to do the whole hoopla thing, but that is definitely not my style.

I was "hoopa-less" as well. When I met in my home, they complained because it was unprofessional. Got a meeting space, and they called it cold and not very much fun (my Sr and my own consultants both blessed me with those compliments!).
Been to lots of "You won this! Now pay for it!" prize desserts, etc. I once won a steak dinner, which ended up being at someone's home (not the promised steak house), and we had pulled pork sandwiches out of a crock pot. I had to bring a side dish.
I've also been the recipient of notes of encouragement written by my Sr's assistant, or her husband. As if I couldn't tell handwriting apart. I had to trash those because if I looked at them any longer than 2 seconds, steam would start coming out my ears.
There are some seriously crappy star prizes. I had some nice ones. Got an Avia jogging suit once - that was nice. I learned fast never to pick the jewelry - always crappy.

M.d.T.- you sound just like I was- I wasn't one to do chants, songs or cheers, and I wasn't going to give out stupid prizes- it was hard though, but section 2 and even just products were popular, and at least things they could use to sell products- how many customers did a consultant get because of some glitzy ring? zero- but some samples- at least they can actually use them to sell products and make money for themselves- that was what I thought anyway. I wanted my consultants to sell, because I truly wanted them to make money- I wanted that for myself too- but alas, I wasn't, and they were'nt really either, so here I am-
