I ran into an aquaintance at my son's school carnival.  "Lisa" sells those faux designer bags.  There very cute, about $60-$100 per purse/bag, but fake all the same.  If I'm buying fake, I guess I want to go to Target and spend $20.  She also sells Lia Sophia.

Anyway, I was just trying to make small talk and I commented on her cute bag.  She keeps calling me to host a party!  I can't take it anymore!  How many times do I have to tell her now is not a good time, politely brush her off, etc?  I'm a working mom.  The LAST thing I want to do in the evening is a host a stupid party that doesn't involve hanging out with my girlfriends talking and having cocktails.  Listening to someone's schpiel plays no role in my idea of a good time.   mad3

OK, first of all....selling those faux designer bags is ILLEGAL!  Seriously, a few years ago those parties were really big around here and then one got raided by the police.  Not cool.

There have been all sorts of news stories on why you should not buy counterfeit goods, I'm sure if you google it you will find plenty of ammo to say "sorry, I can't be involved in anything illegal like that."

Sassy, that bust was at a home in metro ATLANTA.

She'd better stop...in fact, I thought everybody had stopped after that!

Not everyone has stopped - I live in the midwest and they're just getting here! I agree though - if I want a designer bag, I'll go to Target Boutique~

Nah, mom- she just stopped selling sertain designers knockoffs when that happened (she told me Coach was one of the ones people got in trouble for, so she won't do Coach fakes now.) I'm near Dallas, and she doesn't care. That's her "business" that she rund (not sure if she has another job during the day or not)...

rofl I'm dying!  You know, if they didn't make those knock-off bags so darn well, I wouldn't be tempted to buy one!  A friend had the cutest "Kate Spade" the other day and turns out some guy had come into the bar her mom was at and she bought a bag!

When my friend/director told me we were going to a purse party I was thinking "omg, there's an mlm for pocketbooks, lovely".  When I walked in, it was almost Heaven.  If he'd had shoes, it'd have been Heaven.  I don't think I bought anything that day, I can't remember but then at my friend's party, I bought two bags, then had my own party and ended up with 4 more and then when another friend invited me to one, I bought a Burberry knock-off.  It was a birthday present to me.

I just thought it was so funny to get an invitation but be told that I couldn't bring guests unless I really trusted them, the guy's business card says "Sales" with his phone number and name and he drives an OLD unmarked van.  THAT'S not suspicious looking at all, oh no.   rofl

I thought that too.  I think some place around me was busted a few years ago.  But I might be wrong.

Judi, why not just tell her the truth, that you have had your fill of MLM's and though you don't want to hurt her feelings, you have no real interest in supporting another MLM.

leavemebee- I have to ask, what was/is the average cost of the bags you have purchased?  I have seen them in a mini mall around here and I am curious as to the prices this guy is charging compared to the ones in the store here.  And, please be careful so you don't get in trouble!!!

rofl   rofl  I have a mental picture of the police busting in on the purse party!!

Ginger-I have heard about these raids and I thought the same thing, obviously if this guy is selling with a generic business card and you can't bring guests you don't trust, then it is still not legal.

this is ridiculous. Why buy a knock off anyway? Is the point of the knock off b/c you just love the bag that much? Or the "workmanship"?? Or is it that we just want to carry around a bag w/ a certain label on it? I don't get it. I'd rather have a well made bag that doesn't say Hogan or Burberry or whatever than carry a knock off that looks like a knock off. sorry---this topic frustrates me. I'd better get outta here--but I'd advise to stay away from salesman who drive big vans and act secretive---that is kind of scary. In addition---where are those bags made? most likely by children somewhere----another thought. they cant sell them on the streets in the open so now it's all covert and underground.
for pete's sake--let's not support something like this.
Tell your friend that she may be involved w/ something that isn't legal and she may want to check it out. in the mean time, you're not interested---plain and simple. Saying "it's not a good time" only tells her to keep asking b/c at some point it will be a good time ---you're giving her hope which you will have to squelch completely I'm afraid. :(

Jypsi - I paid about $40 and under for the various bags I have.  I have one bag that's a "Gucci" styled tote.  It has held up great and I love it.  I'm a nasty thing when it comes to testing out a bag.  I took that one, pulled on the handles, pushed at the bottom, pulled at the stitching on it.  Basically, gave it a severe once over to see if there was a weakness in it anywhere.  I couldn't find anything wrong with it.  I'd rather spend $40 on a basic bag that will last me for years instead of buying a new one every few months for 10 bucks or so at Walmart, which is what I used to do.

Sassy - I think if the guests are not clueless enough that they too go to jail!  There was a video on the web of a party getting raided.  That was weird though, it was in a hotel and it was like they were doing it for a bridal shower or something.  I saw it the very same week I had been to my first party.

BlueOverPink - Here's my thing, I like certain styles of bags.  I don't want it because of the name that's on it.  I have a knock off Burberry bag because I really like that pattern.  Am I going to pay about $400 for a bag?  No way (let's not ask how much chickie here spent on lipstick).  There are somethings that I liked them and they went and stuck a damn Kate Spade label on them.  One of my favorite bags is a woven tweed bag that has all of these great colors going through it.  It's perfect for fall and it's great with tons of outfits.  I got it because of that, not because they stuck a label on it.  I have one bag that has purses on it.  I liked it, thought it was so cute for the summer time.  I thought it was hilarious that it was the same pattern that the next quarter's prizes from the director were!

I hope that makes sense, I mean, in short, I bought the bags I did because I liked them.  Had nothing to do with the labels on them.  I'm a purse-aholic!

As far as where they came from, I'm pretty sure he gets them from New York in the Chinese areas.

I do wonder about one thing, if you purchase a knock off bag and tell them to remove the label, would you still get in trouble?  As best as I can tell, it's not the bag but the label you are attaching to it that's the big taboo.

Before they started cracking down on it, there were actually booths selling "Fake Spades" at our local holiday market hosted by the Junior League.  Not being into high fashion at that time, I didn't really know they were exact knock offs--I bought a cute striped tote bag because I liked it.  The woman who was selling them told me she was out of the little Kate Spade tags to glue on, but if I left her my address, she would mail me one when she got some more in (most everything in her booth had the Kate Spade tags already on them).

I'm not sure about the legality of selling something that looks like Burberry or Kate Spade but doesn't actually have a tag.  On second thought, I am sure that the Burberry plaid is trademarked so whether the tag says Burberry or not, that's definitely counterfeit.

It always makes me think of The Bold and The Beautiful...at the very beginning of the show, way back when my 20 year old was a baby, one of the first major story lines was how Sally Spectra would sneak into the private showing of the Forrester Collection and steal all the designs and have them out on the street in a cheaper line within a week or two.

If I was Kate Spade, I'd be ticked.  She has a very distinctive and original style and it's theft of intellectual property.  I don't blame any of these designers for going after the counterfeiters.
