I'm ashamed to say it, but MK is not the only crappy scam I have fallen for. I must be a sucker. *UYC, we need a sucker smilie* Anyway, here's my story.

I wanted to refinance my house, so I went through Lending Tree and out of the quotes I got, Quicken Loans offered the best deal. I talked to this rep a few times and we worked out a deal They wanted $500 up front. I thought this was a little weird as I had never run into this before. Previously fees were part of the closing costs.  **Note to self: NEVER NEVER ignore than funky feeling in the pit of stomach** The rep said "oh, don't worry that will get refunded when you close on the loan." I got the good faith estimate, signed everything, paid the $500 and the guy came out and did the appraisal. Then they turn around and say we can't do this deal, we offer you a new deal, which was ARM (I wanted fixed..duh that's why I started this) at a higher interest rate!  evil I had to call a bunch of people up to the president and she told me she could only refund $138 so I told her I wanted my appraisal since I paid for it. I finally got the refund after I had to email and remind her. I don't know if I can use my appraisal. The pres said she would sign it over to another bank, we'll see if that happens.

I thought Quicken was a good company and I have heard that used to be the case, but they have gotten kind of shady lately. The sales person I talked to was certainly your slick stereotypical sales type. I found some stuff on the internet warning people to beware of mortgage companies that want fees paid up front. Apparently this is a growing scam.

retch  Sick

Anyway, I thought I would start a public service thread so we can warn each other of crappy scams to beware of.

oh that is horrible!!! I'm so sorry - did you report them to someone? Does the FTC handle mortgage swindlers?

this is off-topic (as usual) but did you guys see the video of that reporter in San Diego? The one who was investigating a couple for a real estate scam, and they attacked him on camera?? Wow - there are just so many scammers out there. *sniffle*

this guy and his wife were buying real estate under fake/stolen identities, so that they wouldn't have to pay the mortgages. Then they collected the rent on the properties, ran them into the ground, and walked away. People who had their ID's stolen for this find out (all of the sudden) that they own property that has been trashed, and they owe tons of money (because of mortgages taken out in their names) plus their credit is ruined, etc.

So this San Diego reporter has been going around interviewing all the people who had dealings with this couple. Apparently these two have made violent threats against many people, including one architect who said they threatened to "break his legs and rape his wife", etc.

So anyway, this reporter was standing on a sidewalk somewhere in SD, interviewing another victim or something...when this woman pulled up in her car and ambushed them. After she assautled him a few times (on camera), her husband pulls up and beats the crap out of the reporter (on camera). Then the woman tried to get a gun but couldn't find it in the car (thank goodness) and the cops got there to arrest them.

You can see the whole video on one of the news channels - Foxnews and CNN both had the video on their sites yesterday.

There are scumbags everywhere. *sigh*  This identity theft stuff is the same kind of crap going on in Mary Kay, of course.

Off-topic.  PRDiva - your signature "line" in soooo cute.  Is that where your baby is in the gestation thing?  (Can you tell I've never had children?)
I hope you're going to keep us updated with these.  How fun.   smiley

On-topic.  I'm beginning to think that any ad you hear on the radio(other than local business) is promoting a scam.  Crazy!
