Now that I am finished with MK I have been looking at other home based businesses to see what the requirements are to be active.  I am definitely not going to be selling or recruiting but I figure MK is not bad as far as the starter kit goes and only doing $200/year.  I am thinking about Pampered Chef and Gold Canyon Candles...personal use only!!!  Any advice?

check on the pampered chef thing- it is a good deal to sign up and get the kit, my sister did that- she has signed up for many an mlm---but that is another story---
anyway, I think you have to hold a certain # of parties or you lose your consultant-ship, or whatever they call it---not sure the numbers, or it may have changed, that was a couple of years ago---but check that out. smiley

Usually you can get the products for a fraction of the price on eBay. From any of these home businesses.

You have to seriously look at all the materials from the company and it sounds like you are doing that.

Do you want to hold appointments and cook for a bunch of women? That's what I would ask myself with the Pampered Chef thing.

Sounds like a lot of work. But then, I think most of these things are. They make it sound easy and quick but there's a lot more to it.

I agree.
With MK, since the company doesn't require you to actually sell anything to be a consultant, yes, you are right, as long as you order $200 wholesale at the very longest every 11 months, you will maintain your consultant number.  I'm technically still a consultant ( in fact, I actually still have 12 team members, believe or not- even though I haven't done anything w/ my mk business in a looooong time-) I did place an order about 4 months ago to get some things I still use, and that my family uses-- so it is easy w/ mk and I'm sure there are some other companies like that---but mk is somewhat unique in that the consultants get an inventory and purchase, instead of the company keeping track of actual sales to customers.
But, with a lot of the company's, you get commission on what you actually sell, and so on, and so it all works different, meaning, there are party quotas, and sales quotas, etc. - whereas in MK, part of the appeal to people is that there is no "quota"---of course, we never considereed having to place $200 every 3 months to maintain your 50% discount/active status, receive commissions only if you're active, etc, a quota did we? (man, that is really a little deceiving, huh???)

If you want free pampered chef, you might just host a party.
I have been a hostess for other mlm just a few times, but each time I've gotten 100's free in products- because their free product for hostesses actually comes from their company, not from the consultants/rep's  own store of products---very different from mk in that aspect (like party lite, or stampin up, etc)...you can really get a lot free if you have a lot of people at a party, and if the company is something that a lot of women you know would be interested in---

It's amazing how different they all are from one another--

anyway- that's my 2 cents, or 4 cents or whatever. You'll have to just do what you think would benefit you/your family-but maybe hosting a party would give you a better look at what the products are all like and if you would want to be a rep or not- you could casually ask the rep about it, just tell her you're curious, etc, and wondered how it worked for her....

I think Pampered Chef is one of the few MLMs that are really worth a look, if you like to cook.  I would probably try it, if I knew how to cook.  LOL

You will find that their business model is a bit different.  It's still an MLM at it's core, but there are some differences.  You will NEVER ever ever hear anyone encouragining you to buy inventory.  You  buy a starter kit and use those products for your demonstrations.  If you decide to buy more for persoanly use or demonstration, that's your choice.

Also, people that I know LOVE Pampered Chef.  It may not be consummable, but I have seen women go to several different Pampered Chef Parties so that they can get a few tiems each time unitl they get most of the catalog over time.

The price of the products is not too bad.  When I have looked up pricing of similar items, some were less and some were more.

I've never sold Pampered Chef, so I can't tell you what it's like from the inside, but I have been to parties, and am actually reading the book about Doris Christopher.  I like what I have read so far.

If you decide to sign up and give it a try, just use smart business sesnse and if it ends up not working for you, then know when it is time to get out.

If you want to get the kit for persoanl use.  It's worth the $99 to get all that great stuff.  They say you have to promise to do six shows when you get your starter kit, so you might have to try to do at least that many.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I agree with Beauticontrol4me - most women LOVE pampered chef products!  I usually get invited to PC party about every 12-18 months and I usually go and buy something - it may only be $25 or it may be $75 - but its usually something.

And I've never worried about the consultant calling me up and trying to get me to join or buy more products!

But after my MK experience, I think I'm done with direct sales.  Sales are definitely not my thing.

I agree with UpYourCadillac - take a look on ebay.

You can get any MLM product there.  If you buy from a reputable seller, you shouldn't have any problems.  You can often get the products at or below wholesale, even when you factor in shipping costs.

With any MLM, you have the catch of having to make a "minimum order".  That means you'll have to find others to order with you or you'll have to order things you really don't need/want.

Ebay is the way to go.  I get lots of clothes and makeup there, and I've never been done wrong.  I had 2 situations where I received a sketchy product, but both were from reputable sellers who corrected the problems right away.

It's just so much easier than joining a MLM...

I agree! Joining the MLM is a waste of money if you just want to buy some of the products - Hooray for Ebay!

I always told myself I would never do any of these party selling things.  I only got dragged in because a good friend of mine did it and I thought I could make it worth my while just selling to the girls at work so I jumped in and found out about the $200 wholesale order every 3 months.  who goes through makeup that fast anyway!  I thought I had asked all the right questions but apparently not or I wouldn't have wasted my time!  I should have talked to other friends who had gone before me to find out all the details! so I guess my advice would be to ask people who are doing it or have done it what they think... the people who aren't going to make a buck off of you joining!

I went to a lot of those parties when I was younger, stayed at home and was dying to get out of the house at night.  (these are the same women you see trolling Target and Walmart at about 8:00 pm...."somebody else put these kids to bed, I need a break!" LOL!)

There's no way that I could imagine going to them or selling the stuff with another job, and as your kids get older the physical part of taking care of them tapers off, but the toting them places has only just begun.  So if you think you'll have more time when the kids get older, forget it.  It just gets worse.

My two stints into the home party sales had opposite results, but I liked one product and hated the other.  I was "successful" for what I wanted out of it--good discount on baskets and a night out here and there, a few freebies here and there, and a little extra money.  When it becomes an albatross hanging around your neck, you're spending more than you're making and your family takes a backseat, IMO it's time to give it a rest and suck it up and pay full price or go to ebay.

The main thing that attracts a lot of people is the feeling of being "in the club", so I always say if you need that, join a real club that doesn't cost money! LOL!

I've tried, Home Interiors and gifts, Partylite, and Mary Kay.

I to have vowed, by the Grace of God I will, (Don't want to never say never)

But I will not EVER, EVER,EVER, do another direct selling company again either.  I'm going to get a REAL JOB, WHERE YOU MAKE REAL MONEY TO PAY OFF MY REAL DEBTS, Not get a j-o-b to go into debt to make someone else rich.

I have to say, I made money in Partylite, were not talking alot of money, but I didn't have any inventory to buy or have left laying around, I got my kit free, and I can use that until i don't want it no more.

And I don't have to buy any product if I don't want to, So all the profit that I made was mine, because they pay you from your shows.

Well, That's my 2 cents  Cheesy

this is funny - I promise I won't ever join another one again - but MK was my first and only!

you girls that join them over and over, I like to call "serial MLMers". ha ha It's like an addiction or something. I had one friend who (with her hubby) tried a bunch of MLMs and lost thousands of dollars until they finally figured out that MLM was a scam. At least they finally figured it out!

It's the people who join one after another, and then say that "it's a great opportunity; it just didn't work for me." Even after seeing what really goes on in MK, some women still want to belive that MK isn't that bad - it's those types that are the most annoying. They bug me even worse than the Kayots, because they stare the truth in the face and stil ignore it. At least the Kaybots are so brainwashed they don't know the truth when they see it.
