Did anyone watch 20/20 last night? OMG it was so sad. It was about AMERICAN kids in low income neighborhoods. So incredibly sad. I wanted to take all of them!!!!!
They showed a family of 7 I think. The father couldn't work anymore, I can't remember why, but he was disabled. The family had no mother and the daughter and her Babbie's lived there too. They receive $700.00 a month in food stamps and it's not enough! They don't buy vegetables because they are too expensive. They live in New York so I guess food must be REALLY expensive? I know in Oregon, you could live on that, but oh well. It was still very sad.
There was another family, mother and 2 boys, cute as can be OMG, I want them!!!!!! The mother couldn't read very well (25 years old), couldn't find a job (I don't get that), She had people all around her to help her and she didn't try! I was in tears when they were talking about this family!!!!!!!! They had no where to live, all she had to do was get a job and she could get housing!!!!!!! GET A FRIGGING JOB DAMN IT!!!!!!!! OR GET YOUR TUBES TIDE!!!!!!!! 
I know what it's like to feel stuck, I was stuck in a bad marriage for too long and finally HAD to make a run for it!!! There were times I worked 14 hour days to make ends meet. I had no kids, but people with kids have way more options for help!!!!!!!! Anyway, it was really really really sad!!!!!

I watched that last night. It was heartbreaking, especially the kindergarten age son of the 25 yo old mom. His name was Ivan and just a precious little face. All he wanted in life was a house...a home, with food and curtains. He was so precious. His little face just begged to be taken in your hands and kissed and loved...

He was so excited to start school, then was very scared at first until he found out they would give him food.
And did you see Ivan kiss his little brother bye when mom left him at school? So sweet.
I, too, wanted to just bring them all home and love them and feed them and keep them warm.

Those are the little ones that can fall through the cracks and end up doing all manner of things just to survive.
But I admired the son of the disabled father. He was the first in 3 generations to graduate HS and he worked very hard to help bring in money for his family. He talked about rationing the food so it would last the month.
Kids shouldn't have to worry about those kinds of problems. He should be worrying about college and a part-time job to finance his PS3.
It made me feel very small and petty when I compared my problems to theirs.

My son's school uses paypams.com and its great - when it gets low it automatically refills his account so I don't worry him not getting lunch.  Maybe you could start a campaign at your school to get this system!
