I said I would share some stories with you all and I thought I would start with this one....I will apologize ahead of time as I may get long-winded but just thinking about posting these stories is already making me feel so much better.
First let me say that I loved my original director - she became a very good friend of mine, I still consider her that. She was honest to a fault (she told us "consultants" way too much about the real MK - thank god!), she didn't push inventory (actually sat down with recruits and talked about their financial situation), and she didn't get along very well with her senior.
One week, only one new consultant showed up for the success meeting - it was the NCs first meeting and I know my director was probably a little embarassed. There were 5 others that had planned to be there that night but didn't end up making it - some called to let her know, others did not. Well, two days later we get this email from her berating all of us about not coming to the meeting and that we owe NC an apology.....I guess you could say the hell flew into me - this was not at all in character with my director's normal behavior. I replied telling her that while I was sorry that NC was the only one there that I had a childcare issue and that the last time I checked, this was MY BUSINESS and it was MY CHOICE whether I came to the stupid unit meetings in the first place - that the meeting was for my benefit - not the others (of course, that's not true is it - "if you are successful, the meeting needs you; if you are not, you need the meeting" AAAHHHH!)......I even suggested that if I had been the director at that meeting I would have used the time to do some 1 on 1 training with that NC. Apparently, I was not the only one that responded in this manner......later I found out that my director was absolutely mortified by our responses and that she only sent the email because she had told the area directors on a conference call what had happened and asked for their advice - the email she sent us was pretty much a script provided by them. They just couldn't believe that we had the nerve not to show up for our meeting - all on the same night - like we planned it or something!!!! I wish we had been that smart.
Our unit didn't participate in alot of area events anyway because of the relationship between my director and her senior....it got even worse after that - as I said before, my director "chose to give up her unit" - I should send you that letter for your files.....she did want to leave bless her heart - she just couldn't believe that corporate would put up with the stuff going on in our area. Now we are a NATIONAL AREA!!!! Even though many of the directors themselves sent letters to corporate about the behavior - bottom line is making money! THAT"S IT, THAT"S ALL - IT IS NOT ABOUT ENRICHING WOMEN"S LIVES - OR GIVING THEM CONFIDENCE - OR WHATEVER ELSE THEY SPOUT - IT IS ABOUT MAKING MONEY!!!!
Whew - I feel much better now! Thanks for listening - I am sure I will be back with more. I can check that one off and move past it!

It's so eerie how similar so many stories there are. At first, I thought maybe you were someone in my old unit! I used to routinely have just 1 person show up to my meetings, and my Sr and I didn't get along at all, she became a National, and I too gave up my unit. I figured out it wasn't me with the part about her sending out an e-mail berating you guys for not showing up. I never did that. I would be disappointed, but I bever said anything to anyone about it. Would just do one-on-one training with whomever showed up.
So did you fall into your now National's unit? Is your old director still in MK?

YEP - I am now in the National's Unit - THEY just debuted at Seminar! She keeps sending me this crap (motivational CDs, etc) and calling my house because "it is FATE that kept you in the company - you were meant to be a director"....It is stupidity that kept me in the company......
My former director is no longer active - I haven't talked to her in awhile but have tried to remake the connection. She would LOVE this site!

You know, from time to time a TV magazine does a show on companies such as MK --- I saw one just a couple years ago that focused on a quick-moving director (can't remember who) --- but anyway, their weekly meetings looked like mini conventions and I was beginning to think we must have the only unit where only 1 or 2 people showed up.
I see now that it was just another (staged) lie set up by corporate.
(I can just kick myself in my skirted behind for showing up week after week in d's house in my hose and all at 9:00 in the morning --- just to find out I was the only one there. ) One year, since I was the only one --- she put me to work in her kitchen helping her make Christmas cookies.
Oh, how I hate myself today for that one! >:(

Actually, I have been to meetings where there was a packed room - I think it totally depends on how many directors are in your area, and if they have teamed up together to share meeting space. In Dayton, Ohio, Mary Kay consultants and directors (and NSDs!) are everywhere - you literally can't throw a stone without hitting an MK rep. A bunch of the directors rented out a convention room at the Holiday Inn on Dryden Rd - (those of you who are familiar with Dayton will recognize that address) I attended one meeting there when someone tried to recruit me back in college - and it was packed to the rafters with consultants, directors, and guests. And the mood was incredibly frenzied and shark-like...the director cornered me at the meeting and got me to agree to have lunch with her, but she canceled two days later without an explanation - she must have realized I was a lost cause back then.

I wonder what it is about Ohio.....there are a bazillion and a half basket ladies there, too, but it makes sense since that's the home of the basket HQ (yes, I will admit that I have worshiped at the shrine of the big basket....and it was fabulous! LOL! Remind me to tell you about it sometime!)
We should see if there is a higher than normal number of Pampered Chef, Partylite Candles and Southern Living at Home reps in Ohio....just for laughs.

Ohio is HUGE for MLM party plan crap. I got sucked into MK & Partylite parties there, and yes, Longaberger baskets is huge too. There isn't a minivan in Ohio that doesn't have a sticker on it for one MLM or another. I don't know what the problem is there. Must be something in the water. :

Utah is another one where there are tons of MLMers. Lots of directors in Utah, if I remember right.
Our unit meetings combined six directors...and any others that wanted to participate at any time. They HAVE to do this to have a decent size meeting. And you need a good size group--at least 30--to make it seem fun and energized. But then, prospective consultants will see all those women and ask you if all these women are consultants around the area. And when you tell them yes, they can't imagine why the area would need one more. Even they can tell that there isn't enough business to go around and that it doesn't make sense to recruit competition!

Sorry if this is off topic, but...were you a consultant in Utah? I only ask because, though I now live in California, I was born and raised in Utah. And before you ask, yes, I'm Mormon, though I don't practice anymore.

We meet with 4 or 5 other directors that are in the Diamond Seminar but have a different National than we do. The meetings are 50 miles away and she expects me to be there every Tuesday. Like I don't have anything else to do. Their little group of Directors come to a town that is 10 minutes away to "branch out" because there are so many people in my area that haven't heard of MK and we need to be working our business. Those who show up go up...(Gag Gag) They claim that they went to the little mall in town (it has 13 stores) and got 15 leads and two guest for one meeting. There were 3 other people at this meeting besides the director and two of them were consultants. If it is a numbers game the numbers don't add up!

New member here and I had to laugh! I'm in Ohio... Dayton in fact. Now I am feeling like more of a sucker. My MK is just personal use. I have a few customers that a service, but that's it.

One of my really good friends live in Springboro. :-)
Such a small world!
Were you a MK rep here? If so, where were your meetings held?
