These are in my Japanese Maple on a twig. As you can see they are about the size of a pea. There are 7 of them lined up!

Oh, I should say that they seem to be made out of mud and the back ground in the picture is college rule paper. Thanks for any help!

My husband says he's not familiar with Japanese Maples but he's seen something like that on Oaks trees. Just globs on branches and it's a fungus. But the way they're spaced out so regurlarly it kinda does look like something a bug would lay out.

Google "Japenese Maple Pests" cause it almost looks like a dirt dauber who kicked up mud to use as a cocoon for babies.

WWIT -

My DH says they look like muddoppers nests (a wasp).  He said they like to make them on limbs of trees and lay their eggs.  He said you can knock them off or spray with wasp/hornet spray.

Yep. dirt daubers. Look for black flying insects that look like wasps.

As far as I know they're harmless.
