That's a good idea, PC.  I tried potatoes one year but I think the bunnies ate them. I have had good luck with tomatoes, carrots, peas and peppers. I like to grow tomatoes because you can get a LOT from just one one plant. There was a thread for gardening on here under hobbies.

Poppa used old railroad ties and made raised beds for a while.   Worked great for carrots & asparagus, tomatoes, he had a bunch of stuff in them.  Plus weeding is easier, sit on the edge and he didn't have them too wide so you could reach 1/2 way across, no bending over!  It's an option, ...

yeah tomatoes cost an arm and a leg, so growing my own would be great. I've heard that potatoes are stupid easy (just cut up a few pieces and throw them in the ground, and they multiply quickly?)
Plus I wanted to grow some herbs too. Do you know how much herbs cost now? Cripes, 3-4$ for a couple of sprigs of whatever. gag.

My mom taught me to plant the potatoes when they start to get "eyes." The eyes are the new shoots. She didn't cut them up but I suppose that would work and you'd get more. I might try them again this year. Dang rabbits.

Herbs are great to grow too.  In the fall, I cut them all and dry them and put them in glass jars from the dollar store. Then I have herbs all winter. I like to grow them in containers on the deck, which cuts down on weeding and it's easy to pick what I need for dinner.

My message got erase.  My grandmother is teaching me what to plant and at what time.  Since I am down in the tropics I have a grapefruit tree, aloe vera and pigeon peas.  We are now going to plant tomatoes, bananas, papaya, mangoes, potatoes and herbs.

PC, I think Sassy_C started a thread about gardening... I replied in it anyhow.  I don't know if it was just a conversation inside a different thread or not (?).  gardenweb.com has some great tips and I joined some thing called suite101.com that has gardening sections per what climate you live in.  I joined just so I could ask questions but haven't checked back yet.  My veggie garden is doing well, now if only I could plant them outside!!  There's still snow and it's too cold for them for at least another month.  It's all in containers b/c I start everything from seed, except potatoes.  I think alot of people will be doing more of this with the prices.  Maybe I'll shed a few pounds tilling the yard by hand too!  :teehee:

You know, "They" say not to panic, there's no shortage in the US, but when I went to the store there was no rice.  Not that I care, I don't eat white rice anyhow.  I wonder if it's happening to other grains too though?  I haven't been to my further away store where they don't charge sales tax where I stock up in awhile.  Makes me wonder if we ought to be stock-piling, or if the media just made people nervous and that's exactly why there's not rice on the store shelves.  Hmm food for thought, har har har.

I bought a bag of brown rice yesterday when I was out shopping even though I have not been eating much rice lately. Better to be safe than sorry!   wink

We have a lot of farmers (mostly smaller ones) in our area and the increased fuel and fertilizer prices are outrageous!  I heard from someone who talked with one of the large farmers that it cost $ 100 per day in fuel to run just 1 of their tractors - they have the BIG ONES, and the fertilizer that used to cost something like $ 600 per buggy is now over $2000.  The little farmers are not going to be able to afford this!

Sounds like we might need to start restocking the pantries!

I planted some melon seeds, just to see if they would take. If they don't come up I will have to get all serious-like, and plow up a bed and fill it with bagged soil. Our soil is crappy. I hope I don't have to go to that expense.

I've already stopped driving as much as possible, and try to get all of my shopping/errands finished in one car trip each week. It's really hard but but I'm cutting out activities that require driving.

The gas is just too expensive, and I have to drive a van, which is a gas-guzzler. Dang all these kids.  :teehee:

I hope the seeds take PC! Although tilling up a garden sounds like a great plan too!

I hear ya about gas guzzlers! We have a big pick-up truck quad cab (for the kids and hubby's wood-working/reno hobbies)

Although we are currently on vacation in MA and it's a treat to only have to pay $3.50-$3-65 per gallon! YAY! Sure beats Canadian gas prices!
