I need to go on a business trip for 3 days (leaving Sun nite and coming back Wed nite). I have 3 cats (well actually 2.5). One of my cats is very quiet and non-interactive. He is my half cat. I call him coma-kitty. Anyway, I am wondering if any of you have ever left your cats for a long weekend or a few days like this? How did they do? I am thinking the two will be fine with each other for company. Coma kitty won't notice I am gone. I have found a pet sitter in my area who is bonded and insured. I haven't gotten prices yet, but I am wondering if the cats would be fine on their own and if I could save the expense. I was thinking of using an auto feeder and putting out extra cat boxes vs. paying someone to come in. This is all kind of last minute and I haven't been able to find a friend who is able to stop in. I have new neighbors so I don't really know them well enough. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks~ Thanks!

I've left a cat before for longer than 3 days, with no sitter. We left her in the garage, though. We put out lots of food and water, and extra cat pan, and she was fine. Now, she was a little pissed off at us when we got back, but that's another issue.

Oh that's good to know. I figure they won't be very happy with me but times are tough and they'll have to make the best of it. I will leave them some of my shirts to sleep on and hopefully that will help some.

Julie, they will be just fine!! In fact, for shorter trips like this, they will probably appreciate no strangers... Since we have dogs now, we HAVE to have a petsitter three times a day -- no doggie door cause of the cats, so they have to be let out... BUT, when we had just kitties, I only got a petsitter if we were gone for more than 3 days. Lots of food, water, and your shirts to sleep on and they will be fine...

I agree with PC and TUP - the kitties will be just fine alone. I have a cat and a dog, but when we leave out of town for a long weekend we take the dog and leave the cat...I think he loves the peace and quiet. I like to leave a couple of small bowls of food and water in different places around the house for him so he has to go looking for them. If my parents are in town, my mom checks in on the cat when she comes to water my plants. Its his mini-vacation from us! BTW - your "comma-kitty" reference had me rolling!

Thanks, I feel better. I have always had dogs so I always had my brother or someone that they know come in. Now I only have the cats, so I thought I would just leave them alone. I think my cats might like that better than having a stranger come in. They would just hide anyway. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a terrible and cheap human, just cheap. Wait a minute..... ...........I just bought them a new scratcher and some new toys and an auto feeder. Scratch cheap.

I agree with everyone else. They will be fine and do put out extra kitty boxes as they will fill them up!!!!!! Ick!
I too LOVED the "coma kitty" thing! LOL We have one like that also!
I think cats preferbeing left alone rather than disturbed by strangers!

I set up the auto feeder and waterer for them to get used to. It took my big male less than 2 seconds to figure out that if he digs the food out of the bowl with his paw, he can get more to drop down. *sigh*

I agree the cats will survive very well with extra food and water! One thing you can do to help with the pissed off cat-a-tude when you leave is to get them some new little toys, mine like the catnip filled one best and then when you get back there's nothing better than special food treats! Treats always make me happy! "Coma kitty" very cute!

Hey y'all! I'm back. Boy, was I worried about nothing LOLLL. The cats did great. They only used 2 of the 3 boxes I left then and didn't leave a mess. They weren't pissed at me either or at least didn't show it. My flight was 2 hours late, so I got home at 11:30 PM. What a relief to not have a mess to deal with.

I took little miss Siamese to the clinic for her rabies shot. She complained loudly the whole time but forgave me within 15 minutes of getting home. I must have the world's most forgiving cats. I can get away with almost anything now. Can't I find more people like them?
