Back to it! Determination!

« on: March 30, 2008, 12:32:34 PM »

Hi everyone!

I am contemplating getting a food dehydrator, but don't know if I want to spend the money!!!!!! When I was with my ex husband we bought one and had it going almost all summer with something drying in it. I don't know now if I will fully utilize it though!

I don't have the garden space like I did to grow what I need, so I would have to buy my produce not knowing when it was picked.

I would LOVE to dry my own onions and garlic for powder, but that wouldn't be worth spending (with shipping) $174.00 on a dehydrator. Arg, I know I would dry more than that, but I'm thinking that with my wonderful produce market we have close, that fresh veggies are better all year long!!!!!

What do you all think? Do you dehydrate?

Thanks!  Love

Poppa uses several (not as expensive) ones.  My favorites are bananna chips & pineapple pieces!  He also dries apple slices for cooking later and does jerky.  I'll ask what other items he dries.

Maybe you can find one at a thrift shop. Or maybe you could post a notice that you are looking for an inexpensive used one.

Mom has picked up some at yard sales, in the original box, never used for $5 or less!

There's got to be cheaper ones out there.  I've seen small countertop ones that don't take much space.  I plan on canning alot this summer, but mostly freezing things, since I live in an icebox and that takes the least effort.  :teehee:

I've owned an Excaliber before and LOVED it! I have borrowed one of those round plastics ones and HATED it, it took forever to dry stuff, because it sweat so badly!!!!! I've looked on ebay and ALL of the Excalibers are more expensive than what I can ge them for through the catalog. I'm still thinking! LOL

Did you Google food dehydrators, usually you can find a site that compares the brands, pricewise and gives you ratings also, you might find a deal or at least which is best for the price!
