Have any of you seen this book and author?

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/01/12/earlyshow/leisure/books/main666429.shtml

Apparently french women don't get fat because they can control themselves much better than us American fatties. ( rolleyes)

While I think her eating tips are great, I don't know if they're really that exclusive to French women. When I was in Paris I saw enough chubby people to think maybe this is a bit of a fallacy. I do remember the french girl I was with in Paris constantly made rather haughty comments about american eating habits....but I wasn't really overweight. I was a perfectly healthy weight for a 20 year old (at the time), but she was less than a size zero! All she ate was cucumber slices and yogurt - seriously. She never really ate anything substantial the whole week I was there, besides some bread occasionally.
I came home feeling really fat and depressed, because I just couldn't starve myself the way she did!

I agree with you PC -- great article with some very good eating tips.  The cucumber slices and yogurt chick is sooooo  unrealistic.  Less than a size zero?  I think I was a size zero when I was in 3rd grade.   smiley   Genetics has a lot to do with our body structures too, as well as aging, etc.  And taking that baby weight off always gets harder with each kid (at least it was for me).

I remember seeing a TV segment on the way that French people eat and on that particular segment, the commentator was saying it was because they drink red wine with their meals that attributed to their lower cholesterol and healthy weights.  Who knows?  Someone always has the "magic answer" when it comes to dieting, healthy weights, exercise, etc.

Great topic for discussion!   Cheesy

I checked the book out from the library last summer. It was a fun read, but although she tries to couch it as a non diet book, it still is to some extent.

The first day you are supposed to eat nothing but leek soup. Supposedly leeks are a diuretic. I like some of the recipes.

Another thing she emphasizes is how you should drink lots of water. Americans tend not to drink enough. Most of their liquids are coffee and soft drinks. Most of us are running around dehydrated.

The title is cute, but there's no such thing that I know of as a nationality that is immune to calories. Really, the point she was making was about how French women have been taught how to manage their food intake in various ways. There are some good things to take away from this book.

I actually bought the book  Sick what a waste of money! I love my  coke among other things, and she kept refering to "many small meals" and bla bla bla...just another fad "diet" book. Here is what I think about that :  pie HEHE. Seriously, leek soup? PLEASE! I will take  cake cocktail Margarita any day of the week, and just work out harder because I had it!

I only drink diet. I refuse to drink my calories, because they are too many foods I like.

but anyway - it's not so much a fad diet as maybe a "philosophy" about eating...but since I saw that philosophy in action in Paris myself, I'm not terribly impressed. This chick would literally eat a cucumber for dinner and say "I'm full". A whole cuke is like 20 calories, yo.

The one thing I like is the wine consumption - now I could get into that. Mainly because if I drink red wine with a meal I actually eat less - it seems to be a slight appetite suppressor in my case... Margarita

PC, I agree with you on the red wine with a meal and eating less.

For me, after a couple drinks, it's hard to pick up food anymore on a fork.... it's all blurry and ends up in my lap... I look down at my plate, and the one plate I thought I had, has now multiplied to three plates - and I think "I can't eat all this food!!" Since less food actually makes it to my mouth, I don't worry too much about the calories!!   rofl rofl

Just kidding with you PC  wink   You know I  Love Ya!!!

PC I wish I could get with that program.  I love my  coke also but the sugar in those things is doing me in.  I have switched to the tiny 8 oz cans though.  Now if I could just train my taste buds to enjoy the diet stuff. faint

I loved this book--but we are francophiles, have a few French friends and it all makes perfect sense!  We've had a few French exchange students and the one thing that we really noticed is that we eat so many things with our hands.....and they eat everything with silverware.

A more scholarly approach to the same subject is a book called The Fat Fallacy by Dr. Will Clower.  He and his family lived in France for a year and ate like pigs but all lost weight.

The secret is real food, sensible portions and all that walking.  My daughter lived in France for six weeks this summer and she lost about 8 lbs, and she was already a size 2.  That's it....I need bootcamp in Paris to jumpstart my diet.  Anybody want to come along? Jumping
