My doctor has told me to get on a high protein low carb diet for my Syndrome X. Any suggestions? I have IBS as well and there are a number of things I can't eat without setting it off. Also, I am VERY allergic to MSG. Makes eating a challenge. Anyone have any experience.

Trapped, I also have IBS! With that you just need to know what sets you off and stay away from it. I know easier said then done! I struggle with it every day!! Eating high protein ans low carbs is a good and healthy but, that is where knowing what sets off the IBS. You need to know so you won't eat it. I suggest keeping a log for sometime, write down everything you eat each day. That way you should be about to track what sets the IBS off. As far as MSG real labels that's what I do. I don't know if this helps, but, I hope does some! Good luck!!

I would suggest a gluten-free diet. IBS is often the diagnosis when the real problem is gluten intolerence or Celiac Disease. Many people find that their IBS symptoms resolve on a gluten-free diet. You can learn more at www.Celiac.com It is pretty much LOW CARB so not something you aren't already trying to do. You can eat rice and potatoes, but no wheat, barley, or rye. Just a thought. Also, there is the SCD or specific carbohydrate diet (or something like that) that has worked wonders for some people. I think they have a site, www.scdiet.org (yeah, just double checked it). Anyway, those are some ideas.

I don't know if mine is "officially" IBS, but I have always had what we call a "funky stomach" and two of my 4 kids have the same problems. I just can't eat out much, because even the most mild thing will sometimes make me "blow" --KWIM I've found that yogurt is the magical food for me--as long as I eat it at least two or three times a day, I'm ok. I've learned to love salad, bean and vege soups, and lots of chicken and salmon. As long as I eat "real" food and not packaged stuff, I'm fine.

Great PB&J and TITC, I would give it 2 solid weeks, and then see how you feel. And MOTR, PLEASE get check for gluten intolerance at your docs office! It is a simple blood test, and it is genetic. I got chills when I read that your kids have the same stomach problems that you do. And it is even more telling that yogurt helps you, because the lactobacillus acdiophilus in the yogurt (the live and active cultures) help to break down food that you have trouble digesting. If you have trouble digesting food, then you probably have a food intolerance. Please check out www.celiac.com, or google gluten, food intolerance, or other key words. I don't want to sound pushy. I just had years and years of "funny stomach" and was told that it was stress, or medications, or 15 other things, and when I finally found out what it was, I can't even tell you how much better I feel!!! I don't have anymore stomach problems (including nausea, GERD, cramps, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, etc). I just know how much better I feel, and I would love to share that feeling with others that have stomach issues. PLEASE feel free to PM me if you have questions that you don't want to post to the thread.

I was just discussing this with my daughter tonight, because she babysits for a little girl with gluten intolerance. It would be good to know for sure, right now we just avoid foods that bother us and eat yogurt.
Thanks for the info!

I have stomach issues too (saw a gastroenterologist, I guess I have IBS too). I will take a look at the gluten-free diet and see if that helps. It can't hurt I would imagine since these days EVERYTHING sets my stomach off. I love salads and veggies and fruit. I don't eat chicken, turkey, pork or beef; only seafood. Oh and I am lactose intolerant.
I used to be able to eat salads and not have any issues. One day I couldn't eat salads with major bloating and such. Doctor had me take all out fresh veggies (no salads), beans and dairy (not an issue) for 1 month. After more than a month, I added it back in and now EVERYTHING causes bloating, etc.
Doctor had me take a few types antibiotics to try and get bad bacteria out. I don't handle antibiotics too well and the 1st one caused stomach to feel even worse. 2nd one was milder and took 1/2 of dosage for a longer period of time. I'm finished with that now and stomach still isn't any better (or worse either). I went from some foods causing varying degrees of discomfort to all foods (or a majority) causing varying degrees of discomfort.

That sounds a lot like Chron's. Have you been checked for that? You would need a colonoscopy. I have a really good friend with Chron's, and she can't eat veggies, starches, anything that is "tough to digest". It is really interesting. Anyway, I hope you figure out what is going on! I know that I feel sooo much better now that I know what made me sick for so long!!!
