After the discussion about the low-carb diet, I wanted to share these articles about low carb dieting and health info smiley

This one is about three different diets, low carb, low fat, and medd.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25708495

This is about low carb and cholesterol
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080716/ap_on_he_me/med_dueling_diets

Just wanted to share!

SSW...this is in line with what my doctor told me after diagnosing me as having Type 2 Diabetes, insulin resistant and glucose intolerant.  My blood sugar was not so much a problem as the high levels of insulin required to keep my blood sugar in check.

Watching the carbs and eating more protein keeps me from craving carbs and sweets and I actually feel fuller and more satisfied.

Same thing for me Lipstick. I am insulin resistant. I did the blood sugar testing where you drink the sugary drink and they check your blood after a couple of hours. My blood sugar was fine, but my insulin was off the charts (<20 is normal, mine was 111).

The course of action was to prevent Type II diabetes by going on a low carb/sugar free diet. Has worked wonders for me! 40 pounds gone as of today!

I am so inspired by your weight loss and determination.  I need to get back on and stay on the program...this summer I have been a "slug bug"!
And it will be good for my health and my knees to drop those pounds.

Thanks for the very interesting article! But if you want more info click the link at the bottom and read the whole study! The article left out some very important details! ie more men than women in the study! That makes a huge difference on their final numbers because men and women loose weight differently. Over all it's a promising study and I enjoyed reading it!

I've copied some points on the differences between how the men did verses the women! I'm very happy to report that low fat is out across the board! WWIT I hope you are paying attention to this!  Love :teehee: Love

Hope y'all are up on your stats courses!  Sick :teehee: :laugh3: Love

Among the 277 male participants, the mean 24-month weight changes were ?3.4 kg (95% confidence interval [CI], ?4.3 to ?2.5) for the low-fat group, ?4.0 kg (95% CI, ?5.1 to ?3.0) for the Mediterranean-diet group, and ?4.9 kg (95% CI, ?6.2 to ?3.6) for the low-carbohydrate group. Among the 45 women, the mean 24-month weight changes were ?0.1 kg (95% CI, ?2.2 to 1.9) for the low-fat group, ?6.2 kg (95% CI, ?10.2 to ?1.9) for the Mediterranean-diet group, and ?2.4 kg (95% CI, ?6.9 to 2.2) for the low-carbohydrate group (P<0.001 for the interaction between diet group and sex). The mean weight changes among the 272 participants who completed 24 months of intervention were ?3.3?4.1 kg in the low-fat group, ?4.6?6.0 kg in the Mediterranean-diet group, and ?5.5?7.0 kg in the low-carbohydrate group (P=0.03 for the comparison between the low-fat and the low-carbohydrate groups at 24 months). The mean (?SD) changes in BMI were ?1.0?1.4 in the low-fat group, ?1.5?2.2 in the Mediterranean-diet group, and ?1.5?2.1 in the low-carbohydrate group (P=0.05 for the comparison among groups).

The present study has several limitations. We enrolled few women; however, we observed a significant interaction between the effects of diet group and sex on weight loss (women tended to lose more weight on the Mediterranean diet), and this difference between men and women was also reflected in the changes in leptin levels. This possible sex-specific difference should be explored in further studies.

Hey Sassy, I did notice that, and that the women lost more on the Medd. diet. I think if they had more women that it might have evened out more....but then again the ages of women they chose would make a big difference (since it is harder to lose weight after menopause because of declining estrogen levels).

Either way, I think it is BIG NEWS that the low-fat did the worst. I think it is interesting that both groups did better while eating fats (the medd diet had nuts and olive oils).

I agree! Good healthy fats are good for you! We haven't been buying anything "Low Fat" in our house for years! #1 because it usually tastes awful! and #2 I don't see the point in eating anything that tastes awful!
 :teehee:

However we cut out all trans fats/ hydrogenated fats and oils in our house a couple of years ago! Those are the fats that you need to stay away from! They are evil! :teehee: They are designed to makes foods (fats) last longer and not spoil. So really ask yourself who does this benefit? The guys selling the products that sit for months on a shelf or the consumer? It's all very frustrating and always comes down to money first!  mad2

Unfortunately most things in this world revolve around somebody making money instead of what's right!

That didn't come out the way I intended, what I meant is that making money should not be the driving force!

I've tried the peanut butter without the additives but it is so runny, DS won't eat it - plus it's like $ 4 jar compared to less than $2 for 'normal'

I remember when I was about 18, I was on a diet of baked chicken and eggs only. I forget what it was called but it was boring!! And I was so tired all the time. It did work though.

I really like Smart Balance peanut butter. It is natural and has healthy oils. Yummy too!
