I need dirt on Southern Living at Home. I am on a huge e-mail list of moms (about 800 members) and there's a lady on there proclaiming the great wonderfullness of SLaH. Of course, when I questioned her and shared my MK experience I was just "not cut out for it since it does require work" (love the insults!).  I would hate to see any of the other bored moms (like I was) get sucked into a MLM scheme, but I don't know enough about the company to ask the cutting questions.

here's the basics on the compensation plan:

http://www.southernlivingathome.com/Corporate/royalties.asp

only 25%, and the compensation is even worse than Mary Kay. It's a rip off.

Ask them why there are NO PRICES listed for the products shown on the website???? (Answer: they are extremely overpriced and you have to call a consultant to find out how much the stuff is )

I love their overpriced stuff, and thought about being a consultant to get a discount, but I have known a couple people who have been consultants and made NO money - even having a couple parties a week it just isn't worth it.  Bummer...I wish there was an actual "opportunity" for SAHM's...  cool

interesting....I sent my info into their "consultant locator" to see if I could get a price quote on some of their dishware and glassware. I'll let you know what I find out. (I will probably be hounded to death by someone wanting me to have a party, but I shall stand firm. giggle)

Yeah, I met a lady who did Southern Living and she called me all the time! LOL! Now I know how my customers felt!  stunned When she gave me a book, I was so shocked at the prices! She quit calling after about 3 years....

HA HA
the only reason I was willing to give a local MLM rep my phone number is because I'm moving out of state next month, so she won't be able to find me after that.

My mother in law sells it and finally quit bugging me to have a party.  It seems so weird to me that she is selling it, because she has absolutely no taste whatsoever as far as decorating is concerned and she's a horrible cook.  But she hustles it at church--one of those "Jesus wants us to be rich" kind of places (I swear, we are the only normal ones in hubby's family!)

Both of my SIL's are gaga over the stuff, but I have only a few things--none of which couldn't be found elsewhere for a lot less money.

You do get pretty good hostess benefits, though--and that's all paid by the company.

I've never been able to bring myself to constantly call (harass) people into parties! I would hate for someone to do that to me! I did a "booking blitz" with my director about twice a year. That was all I could stomach. My method was always more inviting people over to my place for events (or to events our director would hold. If they told me no, or they were busy, it was fine with me! (Alot less stress!!)

Thanks for the input!  I always knew these kinds of deals were scams, but I didn't realize just how bad they were.  I was SO STUPID.  I knew I didn't want to get involved in a pyramid scheme and I believed my recruiter when she told me MK doesn't work like that. Why didn't I research?  ARGH.

Anyway, the SLaH lady and a lady some some toy selling company found each other and are having a love fest on the e-mail list. I only hope they don't sucker anyone else in.

I had a party for a friend of mine and none of my guests bought anything.  None!  I understood (because it was all WAY overpriced) but it was embarassing as hell.

WHY IS IT that my own mother would never host a MK party for ME, saying that she didn't 'know' anyone... but she was able to attend SEVERAL other home parties?

One night she said she was busy, going to a SHL party.. I said, oh good!  Get some names and numbers, we can have a skin care class?

That never happened, by the way.

I went to a party once.  This stuff is very pricey.  You can find identical and similar items at Pier One Imports and Kirklands priced much more reasonably.

Love Kirklands too.

I've seen the Southern Living stuff and it's nice but, as everyone has said, overpriced. And as PC pointed out, always be suspicious when you can't get prices on things without connecting with a consultant.
