Kids and renovations are my life!

Okay....so as I alluded to in the Good-mornings and Good-nights thread....I have started something that has got me into the dog house! Our Dining Room ceiling had been royal blue since we moved in.....it's a north facing room and it was always such a dark cave.....(Did I mention that the floor is royal blue too?) Anyway I could NO longer live with the dark cave like dining room ceiling....So I had this grand plan to surprise my hubby by painting it while he was at work! I can paint...that's not the problem....The problem revealed itself when I pulled the baseboard (yup baseboard) from the corners of the ceilings and walls. ~SIGH~ I should have bloody well know that the previous owners NEVER fixed anything and that they were content to cover shotty work over! When the baseboards came off the tops of the wall near the ceiling I found great big holes in the plaster! Obviously at some point the plaster ceiling had been removed and replaced with drywall and the tops of the plaster walls had been slightly damaged in the process! So instead of fixing this (which is going to be very time consuming!) They got lazy and covered it up with cheap crappy baseboard which looked like hell! So one removal lead to another and before I knew it I managed to pull off all the baseboard from the ceiling....the awful looking chair rail which had been glued directly to the plaster and upon removal of this I made more holes in the plaster! I also removed all the wall paper too! Oh and I did manage to paint the ceiling....three coats of primer to cover the hideous royal blue! So here's some pics to give you an idea of what I've got myself into!

Sassy You are crazy, girl! It would have been a great idea if you would have pulled it off, lol. But I bet you two will have looking fine in no time. (Energizer Bunnies) This will probably work out for the best.

Wow, that sucks@ Sorry you have to suffer because the previous owner was too lazy to fix the problem correctly. If anything, you still have a really cool house with lots of character. The majority of the homes where I live are all cookie cutter houses, unless of course you can find an old adobe house which are either mucho expensive or very run down and small. Anyway, all your hardwork will pay out in the end, as I am sure you know. When you get stressed, have one of these on me!

Naw, you guys will have this whipped out in no time! I have faith in you! Compared to the bathroom, this will be a piece of ! You've already got the ceiling done! A little plaster and you'll have it looking like a million dollars (or the Canadian equilivant)!

Yippee! Another project for SassyC! I for one would be happy. Now you can finish those walls the right way and it's going to look SO great. I've been there...all the rooms in our house had wallpaper on them and they didn't prime the walls before they put it on. You can't remove it. Have to paint over it.

Sassy....Is this how you and DH decide which room to reno next? OMG...what a job, but I have no doubt it will be beautuiful, just in time for Thanksgiving dinner! Not quite how we decide.....but I'm thinking this may be a good way to get rooms done....but DH is pretty smart....he'd most likely clue in after the first two rooms! It won't quite be done by the Canadian Thanksgiving.....that's only a few weeks away! And I have to do this on DH's schedule since he's the one repairing all the holes! I tired to talk him into doing the floors now too and I got the big NO....oh well at least he's agreed that they need to be done by spring! UYC, I am happy that we can now fix what was being hidden....but at the same time it scares me....what else have they just covered up? I feel for you with your adventures with wallpaper...that totally sucks! Tam, you are right....this will be easy compared to the bathroom! Thanks for all your positive thoughts and words....I really needed those today!

Oh my. I've been there too. It seems like everything always turns out more complicated once I get into it and find the surprises. LOL I'm sure it will look amazing when you are done. The room already looks lighter with that dark ceiling gone.

It seems like everything always turns out more complicated once I get into it and find the surprises. This reminds me of 2 simple repairs that turned into a nightmare when DH and I were first married. DH replaced the flusher in the commode, went to test it to see if everything was adjusted properly and the handle that you flush with broke off (it was metal).... We had just moved into our first home and our refrigerator (with an icemaker) had been delivered. DH, not wanting to spend $50 having the icemaker hooked up, did the job himself...he wanted to give the fitting one more twist to make sure it was tight and wouldn't leak, when it broke completely...water is squirting all over, the water shut off was in the basement...big mess to mop up and lots of "cursing" Fortunately no children in earshot...I always remind DH now, that he should not make one "final" twist on anything. Do ya'll wonder how we've managed to stay married for 29 years? Here's the answer: In every good marriage there is one good person and one evil one. Two good people could never make a decision " Whatever you think, dear; No, no whatever you think dear". Two evil people would kill each other trying to be boss...guess who's the good one? HINT: My hair IS red! (I didn't have a pointed tail and pitchfork last time I looked, but if the "shoe" fits wear it!)

Okay....slight update on "The Dining Room Disaster" My DH still loves me despite all the extra work I made for him! Plus I think he's actually getting used to the idea and liking it....just don't tell/or ask him if he likes it yet! So I've spent the last week scrubbing 1000 years of glue off the walls! The pictures tell all....see for yourself! The dark spot on the one wall was glue still to be removed! Enjoy!

Making great progress...I love a man who know how to handle a "spatula" I Know that's not what it is called, but that's what I'm calling it since my brain is nonfunctional at this time of night! It's some kind of "spackling thingy"
