I just developed a brown patch on my face at the top of my cheekbone that is about 1 1/2 inches.  I also have a smaller one below my right eye.  I guess they are age spots - I just never saw one as big as the one at the top of my cheek.  I'm only 39 so maybe it's hormonal, I don't know.  Anywho, I'm looking for a product that helps to remove or fade these.  I know MK has something but I don't want to pay almost $40 for it.

Go to a drugstore and look for Porcelana cream. It's made exactly for this. I'm pretty sure they still make it.

Drugstore.com has it, just so you can see what I'm talking about:

It's probably a sun damage spot if it's on your face. Just a guess.

Thanks, LJ!  I think you're right about the sun damage.  I will see if I can find some of it.  You're the best!

My sister works at a clinic and they sell Obagi and she swears by it. But, hydroquinone is the ingredient that is proven to work and fade spots fast, and using some sort of glycolic (AHA) product will help too as it will exfoliate top layers for you.
Sunscreen is a must daily, something that screens from UVA and UVB---that means you need either Mexoryl or avobenzone (aka, Parsol...) as one of the ingredients, or, for a chemical free version, titanium dioxide/zinc oxide, otherwise, you aren't actually getting protection from the damaging rays (just the sunburn ones) as sun definitely makes the spots worse---
fyi, for a cheaper version, Paula's Choice does have a lightening product w/ hydroq. in it I've noticed. Don't use it myself, but I do use her AHA gel several nights a week and it's nice. good luck! smiley There are other lines which have hydroq. products for lightening as well, but that's just one I know about. smiley

I've noticed a definite change in my skin since coming back from Hawai'i in April.  I'd been so good staying out of the sun for years and then whammo...

*sigh*

I am fair skinned and have finally learned to stay out of the sun the past few years, but have discovered that you have to use sunscreen every day!

Since I started driving the school bus, even a day without sunscreen can make a difference.  The sun gets to your skin even through tinted windows and cloud cover!  And hormones also contribute! :surrender:

It also seems to intensify as I have aged (as if getting older isn't enough?)

true. smiley Most of the premature aging we deal with is from sun exposure, and most of that is the day to day exposure (i.e., in car, walking to and from car, etc)
Even when you're not getting a sunburn, the other type of ray is still at work damaging your cells and wreaking havoc on your skin's defenses. smiley The only way to protect from boty UVA and UVB is to daily use something with either avobenzone (aka parsol), mexoryl (new one) or if you don't like chemical sunscreens, one with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
Especially if you use any AHA (glycolic acid) or even retinol, or salycilic product, be even more sure you use spf every day. smiley Otherwise, you're just throwing money down the drain w/ your aha product! smiley
sorry to repeat myself- I am a broken record, I know. But for anyone who hasn't heard me "go on and on" about sunscreen yet,  I'm just an advocate for proper sunscreens---sooo many sunscreens out there for the face actually don't contain one of those key ingredients. And if you don't see one, then they only thing it will do is help you not get a sunburn, but it won't stop sun damage (i.e, wrinkles, spots, etc). smiley

I have found that by using the mineral makeup I have less of a problem.

And if I am in a hurry, I just use the tinted moisturizer with SPF20 then follow up with a dusting of the mineral powder on top.  It gives me the coverage I like without taking much time.  I can add a little bit of mineral cheek color and a lip gloss over my SPF 15 lip protection and I'm good to go!

I do appreciate all the info you post, I have learned a lot from you.  I know you said you got interested and started reading up on protecting your skin.

Do you work in a dermatologists office?

More importantly, if you use an AHA, it makes your skin more sensitive to the sun and thus likely to burn faster than usual.

Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Sun Damage Moisture Lotion is one that was suggested to me. I'll try it after my tube of Anew Alternative Photo Radiance is empty. That stuff is actually worth the hype--it has SPF 15 and  you won't need moisturizer if you use it--but I'm trying to broaden my horizons out of big A.

I had laser treatments for my face a couple of years ago and that made a world of difference. They aren't exactly inexpensive, but it got rid of the worst of my sun spots.

Another product fyi about sun sensitivity: St. John's Wort will make you burn sooner and harder. Yet another free lesson of mine from the school of hard knocks.

I do not. smiley I am just interested and read a lot---and I'm a skin care and cosmetics junkie---I think I could write a book of my escapadaes.  smiley lol.
exactly---all of the aha/bha products, retinols, etc make skin more sun sensitive, but that is not a problem as long as you use spf everyday---there isn't really another way to get rid of the spots unless you use laser treatments.
But, if you use aha or bha combined w/ a hydroquinone product, you should see results. Again---use spf everyday or you'll just be nullifying your efforts.

I wish you luck!!
My sister is actually having laser treatments on a sever brown spot she has, she used to be a sun worshiper, but she works in an office where they offer the procedure, so that's really the only reason she is doing it---as it makes it very affordable for her. smiley

The laser treatments were out of my price range (but that is what was recommended to me for my sun spots)  So, I had chemical peels and I am using the Obagi Nu-Derm skin care... my sun spots "freckles" are totally gone!!  It is amazing!!  I never used sunscreen on my face before.. I hated the way it feels and I hate the shiny effect but I spent so much money to get rid of the sun damage, I am now using it everyday!!
