Were any of you fed the line about how even during a depression, women will still buy lipstick?
What a crock that is! I don't know about the rest of the Kaybots, but if the financial world falls apart, I'm not worried about what color my lips are at the moment.

Yes. Even before MK, I had a drawer full of lipstick from free Clinique gifts. I could have probably gone the rest of my life and not bought another lipstick. And like a good , I threw them all in the trash the day I signed on the dotted line. Sick

Yes I was told by my that the two things that sold well during the depression was alcohol and cosmetics. I can understand alcohol and cosmetics to a certain extent. But I doubt that many people during the depression would dole out what it takes to buy MK. They would have bought the cheapest thing possible. And most people probably did not care what they looked like. In the last year I worked I had a lot of customers that worked at the same places. I had several customers that were laid off or displaced. Of the ones that were laid off all of them told me that they could no longer afford MK, that they were struggling to pay their bills. And the ones who have decided to stay at home aren't wearing makeup except when they go somewhere, which isn't often. And the lucky ones that kept their jobs are being a lot more cautious with their spending and have found cheaper alternatives. I completely understand where these people are coming from because if I was in their situations, I would do the same thing.

I heard this too. What a crock. I have so many lipsticks already, if there was a serious recession I wouldn't NEED to buy any. I know there are a lot of women just like me. Half the time I just use chapstick anyway. hahah

In a recession with money tight, makeup is way down on the bottom of the list. So I would probably skip it. Dove and water again for me!

That's so weird! So people really believe in a way that Mary Kay is recession proof?!?!? What a crock! Just count the numbers of directors who have stepped down in the past 2 years!

I joined MK around this time and I have seen quite a few directors step down. Have more directors stepped down in the past two years than in years past? I have always wondered this because it seems like a lot of turnover. When I started seeing these women step down, I started trying to find out what was going on. And of course the Kaybots will not discuss anything that is negative. They will spout some spiel about the person going in a different direction. I started sitting back observing and that led me to get out of the fog. Of course I was led to believe that a new director makes 40K a year. Then I found out that the income was in the 20's and then expenses eats most of that away. When I discovered this I decided that I would just service my customers and not try to recruit. That was about a year ago. Now I'm out and I couldn't be happier. My DH said recently that I seem much calmer and happier since I got out.

Yep, my always said the same thing - "there are 3 things that are recession proof - alcohol, tobacco & lipstick - a woman will always find the money for a lipstick!" Ugh. And to think I spewed that same thing!! When I think back to the things I said...and really believed... Sick
