I get the email beauty bulletin from Paula of paula's choice products- anyway, there is usually a question/answer section to it along w/ a product review of something new, etc.
this time it was classic. There was a question posed by someone about a MK party they attended where they were told some things about makeup that are, well, just not true.
I think it's funny that MK is coming up in this way in other circles--
I'll post the question below. smiley

Dear Paula,
My friend recently started selling Mary Kay and her mother-in-law hosted a send-off party for her. During the presentation, she made a comment about foundation that almost caused me to fall out of my chair. She claimed that it “keeps dirt, oils, and outside elements from getting into the pores” and protects the skin. Am I completely crazy to assume that any makeup you put on your skin can clog up the pores and trap dirt and oils with it? Please enlighten me. Thanks for being the voice of reason in the cosmetics industry!

funny, huh? I wonder if that might make anyone google Mary Kay and find this site. You never know.

groan  I said that same thing in my classes!  At the time it made sense, put foundation on over a clean face and at the end of the day, wash all the grime and yuck from the day down the drain with the foundation.

Too Funny!  The script we were taught was that foundation is the final step in skin care - the step that protects your face - we were taught to use the analogy of all the stuff that gets on your glasses during a regular day "think about how many times you wash your glasses during the day - your foundation keeps all of the dirt and dust that would normally burrow into your pores from getting in".

That was one of the craziest things in MK - all of these cutsie little stories about skin care that we were taught - who knows if they were actually factual...Yikes!

UGH!!!  I've so said that too!  I never questioned what they told us about skin care and color because I thought they were so reputable and they had done the research so we didn't have to!!  We could just spew out whatever they said and it was legit!

Speaking of -- Did anybody ever see those Order of Application Cards?  There were about 30 steps.  It would take all day to put that much @#$@#$ on your face.

I did see those and I had the exact same reaction.   Seriously, common sense would tell you that the less crap you put on your face, the better.  But, then MK has never really been about common sense, now has it?  wink   Bubble

Oh, I'm right there with you. I thought it made sense- of course, it was a way to sell our products. I think that there is a part of it that is true- I think that foundation can provide some protection if it's loaded w/ antioxidants, or is moisturizing, but as far as protecting it from things in the air- no. large particles in the air can't get inside of our pores anyway- it's things we put on our face, oil, our own oils, that clog our pores---
also, as for the all one product lie---yep- guilty of that too. It's fine to mix and match, you use what is good for your skin type, no matter what your age. It's not your age that determines your skin type anyway. Who ever said that? MK? oh yeah.

Oh crud.  I said that too.  With a straight face.  rolleyes  I'm just glad to know my face was 'protected' with MK foundation when I said it.  Just another example of the spin we were fed as gospel.  I'm so embarrased blushing, I accepted so much of what I was told.  I mean, it must be true, right?  Well, I accepted skin care and makeup advice.  I knew I didn't know enough about those.

Well live and learn.  giggle

OMG, y'all are killing me here! I had all of those scripts memorized down to the word, and I said all these so many times I am cringing as I read them!

... wash all the grime and yuck from the day down the drain with the foundation.

Yup, said it many times. Along with the, "In Mary Kay, we have a party every night because we're making money as our product goes down the drain, and of course you'll need to come back buy more."

...we were taught to use the analogy of all the stuff that gets on your glasses during a regular day "think about how many times you wash your glasses during the day...

Oh I feel sick! I told this one to so many people! Acckk!

You didn't want people to create "chemical warfare" on their faces?

I remember the one and only time I used this was when a woman asked if she could use MK microdermabrasion and Shiseido foundation!  Bash

Oh man, I am going to crawl under a rock, because I know there are dozens more of these crappy "lines" that I uttered so many times! Oh, I am so glad I know better now!
