MK Ash's thinking was that it was best to start building your business with friends and family because they are the most supportive and easy on you when you are beginning.

Ha ha ha.

Actually, most consultants I talked to have found it to be exactly the opposite. It's easy to "fake it 'til you make it" with strangers: they don't know all your history and your personality like your friends and family do.

Also, approaching friends and family to help you start your home-based business will put strain on those relationships. Imagine the Aunt or social acquaintance who ends up on your list of 50 people to contact who then realizes you haven't talked in months or years, but now that you are selling something you suddenly have an interest in them.

In a real business, you contact those who you genuinely believe would be interested in or benefit from your product. No, just because they have skin doesn't mean they need MK. Sorry.

Agreed!!  I always found myself more comfortable doing a skin care class in front of strangers than family and friends.  If I goofed in front of strangers, I didn't give a crap -- they didn't know me and I had a sneaking suspicion that I was never going to see them again.  When I would try to be serious in front of family and friends, they knew that wasn't my personality -- I like to have too much fun and be silly.  I had a skin care class hosted by a former co-worker and she had 9 guests -- some of whom I knew and some I didn't.  When they started acting up and being louder than me, what was I supposed to do?  Yell "Class!  Pay attention!"  Of course not.

Also, I knew my family and friends were just trying to be nice by ordering products from me.  The guilt plagued me for months!

It is so nice to be able to sit back, relax, and watch Pinkos try to "fake it till they make it."  They'll see the light one day.

The part missing from the "friends and family" ploy (reminds me of MCI and we know what happened to Worldcom  giggle) is that, it would be easier to start with them only if it was a legitimate business opportunity.  Friends and family are your only honest voices in the deal, when they smile and say "Sure, if it'll help you" it's code words for "Oh my, what did you get yourself into???" stunned

You mean your family didn't believe you when you started calling and asking them if they could "get excited about" whatever you were promoting that week?! I've actually had family members attend a meeting then found myself trying to explain the behavior they just witnessed!  groan That was embarassing! I'm pretty laid back, which doesn't fit the  Jumping off the wall MK "Type A" (or D,I,C, or S) personality.

No, my family wasn't excited at all.  I kept having to justify the opportunity, they weren't having any of it... Bubble

Oh my.  The more I'm on this blog the more I realize I'm blocking out parts of my MK experience!!  rofl

So get this.  I'm Miss Desparado looking to get number 8 for DIQ.  I had gold medalled the month before and had a whole load of "maybes" in my list (gee, that list only got longer with the No's.  Hmmm)  So I call my Aunt P. and ask her if she'll become a consultant to help me out.  groan She says yes, but signs up with my gramma's address and contact info because my UNCLE had signed her up to do at least 4 other MLMs (including Mary Kay, and HE signed up back in the day too!!!!) thinking they would get rich and she didn't want him to know because he'd hound her to work the business!!!

What a nightmare.  It's so embarrassing to know the number of mistakes I made.  Thank goodness my Aunt is a patient and loving woman!

I know this is a older thread but, I have to say, who would be excited to know we were calling them to ask them to buy some over prices make-up?   giggle giggle

My favorite part of this line is when they tell you that if you call to sell something, you can write the call off on your taxes! Oh yeah, because everytime I talk to my family they want to hear about Mary Kay - they'll stop taking your calls!

for the most part, none of my family got anything from me.  Now that I am out some of them have told me why would you pay that much for this or that?  You don't need to, it's out there much cheaper and just as good!!  They are so right!!! happytg

I am still trying to find ways to make good with my Aunt and Cousin's Wife.  I had a Smooth Talking Director who convinced them to both sign up under me and come in with $2400 Inventories each!!!  Of course, my Director never followed through on the Freebies and Prizes and they blame me as well as they ended up being stuck with the $2400 in Product.  OUCH!!!!  I will NEVER NEVER NEVER do MLM Business with Family again.

Then of course there was my Mom and Sister who both let me put them in when I was going through DIQ.  They both ordered from me at Wholesale.  Then there were the 2 College Buddies I convinced to sign up under me ~ what a MESS!!! mad2 mad3

"Friends and Family" ~ the truth is if you let your Director and Upline have their way you will have NO FRIENDS and your Family won't even want to talk to you by the time you come to your senses.....

Another with unsupportive family.  They bought a few things, but not much.  They aren't makeup people, so really had no interest in MK or any other brand for that matter.

My family made fun of me the whole 5 years.  After awhile I got so tired of defending it.  And now it kills me to know that they were right.

My family made fun of me the whole 5 years.  After awhile I got so tired of defending it.  And now it kills me to know that they were right.

The only problem I have with this is that our family is supposed to stand by us and be there when we fail.  My husband wasn't happy when I signed on and ordered $2400 inventory, but he told me if it is what I want to do then do it.  He met my director and was actually impressed with her.  As I've said before, she is NOTHING like the women I have been hearing about here.  When I decided 'recently' that I was NOT going to pursue MK as a career he just said that's ok too.  Besides I have big plans for my poems now.  It's a good thing my family isn't making fun of that dream or I would be shattered.

Sometimes I can't help but wonder if you could have done better if your family supported you.  WAIT!!  NO splat please!  What I mean is that I know there are some women out there who run their business legitimately and have made a success of their business with Honesty and determination, yes I realize they have to sell too but it can be done (car dealers, hello!!!  that's a scary bunch)  Just a thought!

Ok, NOW you can splat
