You wouldn't be the only one momof7. Here is some info to help distinguish:

The DSA is the Direct Selling Association, they are really a member company that direct-selling companies are part of. They provide guidelines, through their Code of Ethics, to their members for conducting their business. http://www.dsa.org/

Multi-level Marketing is a type of business that provides commissions from the sale (or order) of products through your downline, the FTC has further explained here: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/pyrdalrt.htm

A pyramid is where commissions are given on recruiting only, not necessarily on the sale of product. Pyramid scams are illegal, MLM's are not.

I am not an expert by any means but I hope this helps provide some distinction for you.

I too was extremely confused in the beginning.  I heard the same story from my adopted director's mouth every meeting about how MK is a dual-marketing company.  It made you feel better about being a part of it.  I never had real direction from my main director so I thought being with the adopted director was better.  HA rofl  It's still the same.....same lies, same denial, same hoopla!  Everyone talking and not saying a thing.  You leave feeling secure in your little pink bubble only to have it BURST the next day when reality set in.

I always had doubts in my mind that something wasn't right.  And when I was moving up so quicly from Consultant to TL I just realized I was recruiting and selling lies myself to gain what???? A few $'s of that FAT Love Check?? mad3  Give me a break!  I lost my belief and I'm glad.  I saw the light and when I look at one of my friends who is a new director and she said she's going back into DIQ, I now realize what's happening.  She's trying to keep her head above water.  You have to sell the hype.  Make others believe and hope they keep that belief.

Sorry for the very long blah, blah, blah, I just had to get that off my chest.  But back to the MLM, that's exactly what MK is....nothing less! Soapbox

If you look on InTouch on their Legal-Ease documentation the Co. is very careful to tell you that "you will no doubt be confronted with questions from customers or potential recruits concerning the Mary Kay marketing plan. It is important to clarify that
Mary Kay is not a multi-level or "pyramid" company."

They make sure to carefully spell out that there is 1 wholesale sale and 1 retail sale, so no middle levels.  I guess they think that justifies it?

When I was being recruited I did ask if MK was just a pyramid scheme and I got the dual marketing answer. Of course, at the time I didn't know anything about MLM. So, my recruiter's answer went way over my head. I just figured she knew best and I was so desperate to beelong that I signed on the dotted line.
