We used his program to get out of debt and it was great. Only problem is that he suggests having NO credit cards...and, well, we kept one for "emergecies" that turns out to be all the time, like going out to dinner. I still pay it off every month. So, if you pay it off every month, do you think there is a problem? Anyone else do Dave Ramsey's program?

I haven't used the program but heard it was really good.  Can you tell me something about how the program works?

I think the best way to use cc's is to pay them in full every month.  That way you are using them more for convenience rather than for buying what you cannot afford.  I think you are using your cc wisely and correctly  but watch the eating out - that can really add up wink :whstl:

Sure! It is mainly all about cutting up the credit cards and only using cash (or debit cards or checks) so you CAN'T get in debt. Then you pay everything off by reducing spending, maybe selling things that you don't need (like extra cars, boats, etc) to pay off the debt. Or maybe getting a second job for the short-term until things are paid off. And then you live on a budget and don't get into debt ever again. No new cars, only used. And no financing anything, either pay cash, or don't get it. The whole point is to avoid debt at all costs....

So no financing of cars either?   That would be tough because even used cars are kind of expensive these days.  I can see not having any cc debt though.  What about a mortgage?

According to Dave, no financing of cars! You save up, or trade in, or whatever you need to do. And mortgages are ok, but you only get 15 year fixed, and you pay it off ASAP. Which I agree with....

If you pay off your credit card every month then I don't see the problem with having one.

We pay our CC off everymonth and we only have one joint CC account. Two cards one account.

Ginger, Love your new photo! You crazy gemini!

I agree with that in theory - we had a 15 on our last house but we moved.  Our last house cost less than $100K -  Now we are in an area where the average decent house is at least $350K.  -  Don't know that we could swing the payment on a 15 year - pay for college  etc etc.-  I'm really bummed thinking about the cost of decent homes.   We are definitely middle class income wise - not destitute but not super rich either

Ginger - Love your pic!

As long as you pay off the balance each month, it's not a problem.

My husband and I started the Dave Ramsey program in October 2006. So far we have paid off $35,000 in debt.  We cut up the cc's right away, I went to all-cash in my MK business (thus, I made no money making Star orders unless I had earned it to begin with).  We like our decision of not having a credit card because I am quick to think we "need" something instead of budgeting it in!  LOL!  If you can keep a CC for emergencies, although DR doesn't recommend it, and you can control yourself and pay it off each month, then you are a better woman than I!  LOL!
DR is actually one of the reasons I QUIT Mary Kay, believe it or not.  I couldn't continually ask women to place inventory orders on credit, pay now for their products with credit, etc.  Just against what we believe and what is comfortable for US now!
Good luck!  Ask if you have more questions... I am sort of a DR nut!

We actually paid for our last car with our tax refund (and kept it for 3 years), and the car we have now will be paid off with our tax refund next year.  We succumbed to temptation and bought a newer car and had a small loan for it.  :teehee:  If we had done like we were supposed to do  :yack: we would have been putting aside money each month for another car, but we didn't.

It really helps to not have a car payment each month!

I just bought a car with my blue check!  It feels good to have a quality car that I have NO payment on.  I bought the DR kit, but wasn't able to go to the classes.  My hubby & I did cut up our cards & are paying them down, but we need to work on budgeting better & saving.

Us too freethinker, savings? What's that? We are really bad at buying on the spot and then realizing we have no savings for emergencies! Ugh!

Us too wwit (the spending thing).  It seems like anytime we have any extra money we end up spending it.  My husband is self-employed too, so it is crazy hard to budget & save, etc.  I used to be really good with money, when I knew how much was coming in & on what date.  I'm looking for work now, actually have an interview today, but that should help with some steadiness of income!

If you get Fox Business Network on your cable system, Dave Ramsey has a tv call in show on every night.

I have my husband to thank for being debt free.  We have four cars that we own and in August we paid off our mortgage on the 10th anniversary of the purchase (we had a 15 year mortgage).  Our only credit card is an amex and we have to pay it off every month.  Actually, an amex is a charge card, not a credit card because the balance is due on receipt of the bill.  Sure makes you think about what you're charging when you know you have to pay for it all as soon as the bill comes.

Me?  I never met a dollar I didn't want to spend.  I'm lucky he was squirrelling away money all those years and had me thinking we were broke.  :yays:
