wow - now I'm wondering...
Did your recruiter tell you that you could make enough money selling MK to pay for your books, etc? (I know I've heard that one before)
Was inventory all your idea, or did you need a little push?

Just remembering my college days...When I was 20 my MK lady tried to recruit me pretty hard, but I couldn't see how I would be able to sell MK and make the grades at school - plus I went to an engineering school that was 90% men, so no potential customers there. LOL But then I fell for the whole thing a few years later when I was out of school....at least you won't fall for it again!

On a side note, remember that you can always get your MK dirt cheap on Ebay, and if you buy from a reputable liquidator there wouldn't be any worries about old product. Just a thought. wink

Inventory was her idea--the only way I could build a successful business ya'know and it would "give me the extra push I needed." or something like that.  It made me nervous.  Really nervous.  Glad I'm cautious by nature!  I have plenty of potential customers at school, I just can't do anything--no class, no facials...no nothing.  Otherwise I get written up or some BS like that--which makes me ineligible to study abroad (for the cost of attending my school and all my financial aid applies, airplane tickets, visas, etc. paid for), which is my dream.  Netherlands--here I come! Bye bye MK!  *wave

Thanks for the heads up about ebay.  What reputable places do you know of?

Thanks  bighug

The owner of this site used to be a Ebay liquidator, so she knows some of the best "MK dealers" - let's ask her, see if she can post some here for us.

As to the studying abroad thing, this really intrigues me. Now why couldn't you do the facial/Skin care party thing with your potential customers? Why was this bad for you, in terms of the studying abroad thing? (I'm not following you there)

But congratulations on studying abroad - stay away from the mushroom shops in the Netherlands.   smiley

I'll try to do my best to explain...

If I were to do anything on campus that brought in a "vendor," I'd be going against my school's policies with their vendor agreement.  Apparently I'd be a vendor if I did anything with Mary Kay, including a skin care class.  Can't even use my own dorm room or any other building on campus.  If I did and got caught, there's a chance (rather likely) that I would be "documented."  That would go on my school record, and when I apply to study abroad I wouldn't be elligble for Cherington Global Scholars.  Cherington is unique to the University of Denver and allows all students with a minimum GPA of a 3.0 and are in good standing with the University to study abroad wherever they would like--DU has over 150+ programs already established--for the cost of attending DU.  For some, this isn't that great of a deal, but for me it is as I'm mainly on scholarship & grants.  Cherington will pay for my airfare, room & board, tuition, etc...and any extra costs that I might incur--including the application fee to the school I choose.

So, if I were to have a MK party and get documented, I wouldn't be elligble for the program and would have to pay for everything by myself...which is pretty much impossible.

Hope that helped.  smiley

Mushroom shops...hehe...don't have to worry about me there.

Oh wow!
now I get it! How did you find out about this rule? I assume that you didn't know about it before you signed up with MK??

yikes. Well, if I were you I would definitely not want to jeopardize my chances of going abroad - so I totally understand!

Nope I had no idea...otherwise I never would have done it--way too much stress!  I tried to reserve a room in my building and they told me I couldn't, so I asked if I could use my room and was told the same thing.

For SAHM's, I take my son to do tastetesting for a research company in the area.  We try different foods for gerber and other toddler brands.  We get a $20 gift card for a local supermarket and it normally only takes a 1/2 hr or so.  Sometimes we get a few calls in a month and those cards add up fast.

I am also registered with another company that does surveys for adults and have tried coffee, cereal, chicken sandwhich and granola bars.  They don't call as often but I get $20 cash for those appts and they generally only take 30 min too.

You might have something in your area that does this too.  My city is not a major metropolitan and I was surprised that they had something like this.  It won't make me rich but if it gets us another $100 a month, then it's worth it to me.  Not to mention.... Free Food!!!!! giggle

The midwest is a hotbed for this because...and I say this with love, I was raised there, dontcha know....they aren't known to be early adapters to new things.  So if it goes over well in the midwest, more than likely it will go over on the coasts.  If you're ever driving through the midwest and stop at a convenience store, you will be amazed at the myriad of choices in sodas and candy, because they are always testing things there.

$100 a month is great money for being a tester!

highly recommend dave ramsey's plan and getting a budget figured out. I'm amazed at how it is working and we aren't making more money- it just feels like it. We are paying off cards using his snowball method-- it works!!

I am SHARP because I left MK!

I've sold items (non Mary Kay) on ebay, and have made a little money.  I am going to sell more stuff, to get myself out of debt (also non Mary Kay).  I was already $20,000 in Debt when my then Director suggested I buy inventory.  No matter how many times I told her I didn't want to take out more debt, she kept pushing and insisting.  Thus, I was only a MK consultant for like a week!

PS This is my first post here.  Glad you are all here! smiley   :ki$$:

I wanted to BUMP this thread! Thanks for starting such a great thread Ginger!!!!!!

WOW, I have been in tears all afternoon, because of my finances! It sucks!!!!!! I blame MKC! I also blame myself for believing in all the crap that my director told me!!!!!!!

I am $16,000.00 in debt and can't seem to get out of it! I keep getting deeper and deeper in debt from all of the over limit fees and late fees (because the over limit fees I was charged when my yearly fee was assessed caused me to go over and now I can't afford to make the payment that they want), all because my interest rate is high, because my debt to income is high, so they charge me HIGHER interest!!!!! WTF, if I can't afford something at 8% interest, I sure as hell can't afford it at 29.9%!!!!!!!!! B*&^%$!!!!!!!

I guess I didn't realize that so many of you are in the same boat!

I am soooooooooooooo tired of worrying about money!!!!!

I got a call from one of my credit companies tonight and the girl was asking how I got so deep in debt and I said, MARY KAY COSMETICS! Don't ever do it!!!!!! She laughed and said her mom did the same thing and got in debt about as much as me! She made me feel a lot better! LOL, She still wanted the payment though!!!!! :-( LOL She got it!!!!!!!

My bank did some shady things this last week and charged me for 4 over drafts!!!!!!! I NEVER over draft!!!!! $35.00ea.!!!!!! My local bank teller even called me to let me know and said that they would look into taking them off. I never heard back so I called the national number and the employee that I spoke to was not a nice person, she said that she couldn't take them off and couldn't believe that someone had really called me due to my bad history with them!!!!! WTF? I have had maybe 4-5 overdrafts in 8 years!!!!!!!!!! WTF. She didn't care about that. I ended up crying and she was all "have I answered all of your questions tonight? O.K. Thank you for calling B of A, have a nice night"  Buh Bye!  Bitch! Oops, sorry!

Anyway, I REALLY NEED to get a hold of my finances and get rid of this debt!!!!! I NEED ANOTHER JOB!!!!!!

I really want to pay everything off, but may have to claim bankruptcy, I REALLY do NOT want to do that!!!!! I have paid my own way, my whole life. I still want to do that, BUT WHAT DO I DO???????????????  :drama:

Enough  :drama: Time to get it together!!!!!!! Thanks for letting me rant!!!!!!!!!!  :loveshwr: :loveshwr: :loveshwr:

I've been reading all of the posts about the Dave Ramsey plan and am absolutely fascinated with the success stories!  My husband and I have been trying to dig our way out of credit card debt that has accumulated over the years.  Unfortunately, I'm not very disciplined when it comes to spending and we have never established a set budget!  Details completely overwhelm me so when I go to the DR site and see all the information and choices I just shut down and exit the site.  Can someone who has some experience with this plan give me some insight as to where would be a good place to start?  (which books, dvd's, cd's, etc)  I would greatly appreciate any info you can offer!

Done I would read the book, Total money makeover.  It is really interesting, he also has the radio show.   We started this last year, but fell off and now we are getting counseling from our deacon and his wife with a Larry Burkett program.  Its just hard to cut out everything, even when you don't do or have anything extra.

Done - I have to second the Total Money Makeover suggestion.  It is very straightforward and takes you step-by-step through figuring out your finances.
