I've discovered a few places over the past few weeks where I have saved money and thought it might be useful.

1. Examine your telephone bill

I would love to give up my land line and use cell phones exclusively, but at the moment it just isn't completely practical. But I hated paying the phone company $50 plus dollars a month for something I use less and less.

I knew that we rarely used any of the special features that were in our bundled service. So I went online to the phone company's site and checked out our options.

I ended up canceling the bundled service and replacing it with the basic service. The only other feature I really used and liked was caller ID, so I kept that.

Voicemail went bye-bye, and I hooked up our answering machine again. Now with the caller ID, I can screen my calls and if in doubt, I can screen with the answering machine. You can't do that with voicemail

SAVINGS: $20.00 a month!

2. Check your magazine subscriptions

I subscribe to several magazines and have noticed an increasingly irritating trend. They all want to, and frequently do, put you on automatic subscription renewal. It's great for them, but it can be deadly for your wallet.

Usually you first notice it because your magazine shows up with an announcement on a special protective cover thanking you for signing up for their automatic renewal (which is a lie, in my experience because I never have) and that you mag will be renewed at such-and-such rate.

This is what happened with one of my subscriptions. Well, something made me check magazines.com and see what the going rate was for it. You know what? Their rate was $29.20 LESS than my "special" long-time-subscriber rate. Didn't take me long to cancel my expensive rate and renew at the much lower rate.

A similar thing happened with another subscription, only this time, they wanted me to renew at a rate that was more than double what my first year rate had been. I let that subscription lapse and waited. Well, if you play their game, it gets real interesting. Every week or so I got an offer from them, begging me to return. I watched with interest as each successive one was lower and lower, until finally one arrived, addressed to my husband, with the exact rate I had subscribed at in the past. It took them up on it.

SAVINGS: $45.00

3. Check out special grocery promotions

One of the main grocery stores here is currently running a promotion for their gift cards.

If you purchase a $300, $600, or $1200 gift card, they will increase it by 10%.

That means an extra $30, $60, 0r $120 in groceries.

If you know you are going to spend at least $300 in a month at that store, then you would be foolish not to do this. They're handing you $30 to do something you would already do.

Just a few tips from LJ.

I think it's important to always be on the lookout and do some critical thinking and math.

Thanks for the tips LJ! I'm definitely going to pay attention to my magazine subscription renewals - I get those annoying "Renew Now" mailers all the time, even when I have months left on my subscription!!   :wtf:

All very good ideas, LJ! I've given up on all my mag subscriptions; I haven't read half of the ones that arrived over the past year!  blushing

The magazines are the ones really getting on my nerves.

I subscribe because if I happen to buy one or two at the store I've just spent almost as much as a subscription would cost. Subscribing in itself is a money-saving practice.

But now, when your subscription comes up for renewal, they put a card stock cover on it saying "Thank you for participating in our automatic renewal program..."

This leaves you scratching your head because you don't remember EVER signing up for any automatic renewal program. Well, most likely you never did. Most likely the publisher sent you a little letter saying that they were enrolling you, with fine print saying that if you didn't want to participate you could contact them.

How many people either didn't pay attention or didn't read it and threw it away?

Then what happens is they send you a bill for your subscription, which is already renewed for a year so that you don't miss any thrilling issue.

If you don't pay that first bill in a timely fashion, you will likely receive the nasty letter that I received for one of my magazines, where they scold you like this:

"When you signed up for the automatic renewal program, it was with the understanding that you would pay your invoice in a timely fashion. Your invoice is now past due. Please remit immediately."

Yep. Well, I promptly went to my account and canceled my subscription. I simply won't put up with this crap. It's offensive, to say the least.

So their little ploy to keep me a subscriber until infinity backfired AND they have ill will as well. Really great marketing plan!

I gave up the mags a while ago. Just can't keep that expense with electricity/food/gas all skyrocketing.

It's getting really scary. We bought this house because at the time, we could afford it. But with the cost of living jumping every month, I'm getting worried about what else we are going to have to give up.

If I have to give up the internet I'm going to  be REALLY depressed!!

I too gave up magazines a couple of years ago.  I had so many magazines coming in I couldn't read them all.

Here are some of my money saving tips, that we have used in the past year:

We have been turning our thermostat down to 65 degrees at night in the winter time and leave it at 68-69 degrees during the day, if we get chilly during the day, we put on a sweater or jacket!

If we get chilly sitting watching TV at night, I get out my big fuzzy robe and fuzzy socks and use an afghan.  Once we get to bed we don't ever feel chilled at all, and in fact sleep and breathe better with it being cooler.

We have been turning the thermostat up to 75-76 degrees this summer and using the ceiling fan during the day, when it gets dark and the sun goes down if we still feel a little warm, I may turn the thermostat to 72 degrees, but usually haven't had to drop it below 73.  We use the ceiling fans in the bedrooms, LR and kitchen.

I got our electric bill today and in comparison to last year at this same time, we have used about 30% less electricity!  We have had an unusually warm June with several days of temps in the upper 80's to 90 degrees.

I have also started menu planning, by first looking to see what is in the freezer or pantry and then seeing what is on sale at the store.   When they have sales on frozen veggies and canned goods or things that we use frequently I stock up buying 10-15 bags or cans, whatever I have room for.  I buy meat in bulk packs at Sam's club and then break it down when I get home into meal size portions and put into freezer bags.  I use as many coupons and rebates as I can and I try to buy when the items are "on sale" and also use a coupon.

We have started buying cleaning supplies, soap, toilet paper, napkins, paper towels at the $ store, you get the same quality for way less.  Also we have stopped buying soft drinks at our house.  We drink either iced tea, water, or kool-aid (again using the store brand not the name brand).

Since we use our cell phones more than the land line, I am comtemplating using the cheaper measured service rate and cutting out the extra options as PC said.

We are considering reducing our cable by getting the basic package and possible giving up high speed internet (that one is a tough decision, because if you use the internet at all it really does make a difference).

I am using this summer time when school is out to go through all closets and every room in the house and get rid of everything we don't need.  I am marking what I want to sell at a yard sale, sell on e-bay or give to Goodwill and putting it all in boxes or tubs as we go through things.

We started using the store brand bread.  We get a large loaf of sandwich bread in whole wheat or white for $1.12, where the same size in a name brand costs $2.69...this is a huge difference and makes no difference in taste!

When I make spaghetti for the family I make it using a double portion of sauce for the same amount of meat, and then i save the leftovers and put it in a casserole layering it with grated parmesan and mozzarella cheese and bake it for dinner the next night!

One thing my mom taught me was to pay attention to your cc due dates.  One "store cc company" that we shop (too often) charges $30 for late fees, even if it's only a day!  I make sure to watch for that bill and pay it off as soon as the bill comes in, even if it's not due until 10 -15 later.  That way I'm sure I won't get socked with a $ 30 late fee!

Tam, I pay all my bills on line for that very reason!  There are only about 2 that I mail, the rest are paid on line!

Me too Lipstick. They get credited quickly and I don't have to pay for stamps.

I was wondering today about all the people complaining about the price of gasoline...

How many of them, do you suppose, have cut back or given up some of their discretionary expenses? For instance, I'm always amazed when I see people who obviously are not doing so well walking around with a Bluetooth in their ear. Are they drug dealers or something, because I can't justify one of those things.   :teehee:

Same with cable and other things. I always have noticed how lots of people have all these "toys" that I can't justify, even though I could afford them.

It makes it easy to monitor activity on your account.  It was by doing this that I discovered someone had my debit card number and another credit card number and was attempting to make charges on line.  By seeing this the very same day I wasable to go to the bank and call all my other card companies and get new cards, credit monitoring for 6 months.

Fortunately the charges didn't go through because they were flagged the person had used random letters for a name and my bank kicked it out and immediately shut down the acct.

Since then I make it a point to monitor all my accounts every few days!

Of course they couldn't have charged too much, since thanks to MK most of my accounts are almost maxed out!  Sick

Great tips guys!  Here's some more that I do:
1. Plant a garden from seed (cheaper than buying grown plants).  Then you have "free" veggies/herbs.
2. Shop your local farmer's market for cheaper produce.
3. See if there's some type of food co-op in your area.  There is in mine but I wouldn't know about it if it weren't for word of mouth.  Everyone gets together once a month or once per quarter, depending on how much food you need, and orders in bulk straight from farmers/mills/etc.  Some people order whole grains and grind it into flour themselves with a shared grinder.
4. If any berries or other edibles grow free in your area, make use of it.  Freeze what you don't need immediately.
5. Give up driving and ride a bike.  For distances that will take over an hour (I've got kids w/ me), cluster all of your errands into one day if you can and take the most efficient route.
6. Cancel cable, magazines, etc.
6 1/2.  Quit buying anything except necessities.
7. Eat dinner by candlelight.
8. Keep all the lights off in the daytime - sunlight suffices.
9. See if you qualify for one of those emergency cell phone programs (usually for people who qualify for WIC but they also have Veterans programs) that allow like 500-1200 min. per month for around $5.
10. Last but not least, stock up on toilet paper and dry beans for when society as we know it collapses!  *is a debbie downer*

I got one of those old fashion screen doors (apx $ 35) for our back door.  Now I can open it up, without the bugs coming in, and get a great breeze in the house during the mornings and late evenings.  For work days, we can usually go without running the ac unless it's really hot!

We also use the clothes line as much as possible - wind is free!

The library--it's not just for transients to wash up in anymore! wink If there's a book you want to read, borrow it instead of buying it. Many also have movies, magazines, and even toys to loan. If your internet bill is a hardship, you can use their computers (I did before I had my own laptop) and many have free wi-fi as well.

Oh yeah, return what you borrow there on time--those fines add up! wink
