I'm a little stressed with some things occurring in my professional life, and I was hoping that writing it out would help me. As some of you know, I co-own a regional mystery shopping company. I like what I do and enjoy working with my shoppers, but for the last 6 months I have been debating on whether I wanted to do this forever. As with anything, the job can wear on me and although the freedoms that come from owning my own business are superb, the stress of it can be overwhelming. Well, very recently my business partner decided she wanted to sell her half of the business, and I agreed to buy it. However, she suddenly changed her mind and basically said she wanted to buy out my half of the business. I was very hurt by this initially but after some long, sometimes emotional conversations with her, I think this may be the best thing to do. But I'm so uncertain of what to do now! A lot of people have told me to take some time off and live off what I earn from the sale, but I want to work. I want to stay busy, be productive and not burn through my money. I found a position at the Alumni association at my alma mater and it sounds like it would take advantage of my strengths, while allowing me to take advantage of the university's outstanding benefit program (I could earn my master's degree for like $50 a credit!), but am I ready to work for someone else again? I'm just terribly nervous about throwing myself back out there, so any prayers or positive thoughts you can send up for me would be appreciated. Thanks!

Velocity what have you got to lose if you go ahead for a shortw hile working for someone else? You could make your money gorw so that when something good comes along you have it availabel. And those master's degree credits.. Think of it as temporary.

Wow Velocity -- if you think about it, this is an exciting opportunity for you!! You'll have money from the sale of your half of the business, you would be able to go back to school, as well as earn money at the same time by working for the alumni association -- almost like a "the world is my oyster" situation. Don't be scared. Give your fears to God and He will handle everything! We're praying for you! Please let us know how you make out.

Velocity, You sound like an incredibily intelligent, strong woman! I say go for it! Kathy and Sally make some very good points! Get a higher education basically for nothing so you can then take the experiences you already have plus your new degree and get back out there in business for yourself... I'm having trouble finding a down side here? I hope this thread helps you figure out what direction you want to go!

Velocity, you can do ANYTHING! I know how you are feeling! I have been working for non-profits from home FOREVER, and just took a real job outside the home. Started yesterday. Very scary! Just really nervous about the whole "office" thing... I am thinking of you and I know you will do great -- sounds like a good opportunity. And like I keep telling myself, if you don't like it, then you can quit!

Love Velocity, things happen for a reason! It sounds like it is time to move on. Try the job with the Alumni Association and see where it takes you. It sounds like a win win situation! PLUS, think of how easy your taxes will be!!!!!!!! Best of luck!!!!!!

WOW Velocity!! You must have been through some major emotions dealing with this! I agree with the others here in that sometimes, God gives us something to change our direction and we have to be open to these changes or we will miss them. Don't let yourself get fooled into missing a good thing. Go to prayer. Ask God to help you make the right decision. It sounds to me like the alumni gig is a good deal for a while. You can work, bring in steady money and not eat into your funds from the sale of your business, and still get a higher education which will no doubt help you make any future career decisions. Life on a silver platter, girlfriend!!! But seriously, write out the pros and cons and see where they point you!! We love you, Velocity!! We'll keep you in our prayers and I have faith that God will lead you in the right direction!!

Wow ladies, thank you so much! All of you have brought up some really good points, and now I'm more than a little embarrassed that I didn't see all of this as a blessing. You're absolutely right - there are so many wonderful things I can do in this situation. I guess its just overwhelming when you're living it and are uncertain of how it will turn out. And thankfully Mr. Velocity has been very supportive (he thinks I could be an astronaut if I wanted, even though I stink at math! ), and now all of you ladies. I will keep you updated and let you know how it turns out - I guess I better start updating my resume.

Velocity, I totally think this is a blessing in disguise - especially if an opportunity like furthuring your education has become available, then you can learn math to be an astronaut! Seriously though, you're an amazing woman who I think could accomplish most anything you put your mind to, so I'll be praying that God shows you where your mind should be. Good luck!!

Update: I officially sold my half of the business today. I'm relieved but sad too. I still don't know what I will be doing, but I plan on getting dressed in my classiest business attire Monday morning and walking into the Alumni Association to ask about that job. I applied 3 weeks ago, but apparently the university is notorious for dragging their feet on new hires so hopefully me showing up in person will get the ball moving. I haven't worked all week, and I'm afraid I may be falling into a little funk, so hopefully I can shake myself out of it by being proactive. I hope its not selfish to ask for your prayers again - I would appreciate them! Thanks!

It sounds like you have a great plan in place for the Alumni job. I'm sure being proactive will be a great thing. We'll be sending more prayers your way that you will find the right job and quickly. Don't get down right now!!! Just think of this as God's mini vacation to you and enjoy it while it lasts. I'm guessing it won't be long. Keep us posted
