Ok I'm making another appointment at the clinic tomorrow, because both of my sons are breaking out with MRSA pimples on a regular basis now. They might both be colonized, but I don't know what to do.
One is 3, the other 18 months.
I looked at that MRSA show on Dr. Phil and honestly I'm so terrified right now I think I'm going to vomit.

PC, I feel your fears and frustrations....I glad to hear that you are going back to the clinic. One thing you may want to clarify is why are they breaking out in pimples. Most people that are colonized with MRSA are asymptomatic and have no signs what-so-ever! This is concerning. Are they certain that the pimples are due to MRSA? There may be another cause for the pimples and then the pimples go on and get infected with MRSA because the kids are colonized? Just a thought? How long have you been trying to deal with this basically alone with what seems like sketchy directions? It looks like months by your previous posts....this is not an acceptable time frame....way too long. You sound tired and I truly wish I could come help you! (I'm most likely already colonized and will be sleeping on my own bug filled pillow tonight!) Keep us posted, you are in my thoughts and prayers daily! Thanks RPT....sometimes I forget that we (in a hospital setting) give really strong antibiotics....silly because I really never thought that Vancomycin would only be given in an IV form!

well it's possible that I'm the carrier - who knows. I'm the only one in my family that has never had a single symptom - no boils, nothing. Everyone else in the house has had boils at some point. The pimples were swabbed last year and were positive for MRSA, and they reoccur on a regular monthly basis it seems. My 3 year old was swabbed and was positive for MRSA and breaking out in the pimples/boils on a regular basis, which culminated in a flesh-eating type infection on the back of his leg last fall (he was on Bactrim for that, has a HUGE bumpy scar from it)
The infectious disease doc didn't seem to know what else to do.

In a close home if one person is colonized chances are everyone is! Pimples/ or boils are NOT a common sign of MRSA colonization! I truly believe from what you have said that these are two separate issues! For some reason they get these "pimples" and then they get infected because they (and everyone else in the house) are colonized with MRSA. If he's already had a "flesh eating" type of bug...your doctor must be more diligent! I think you need a new Infectious Diseases doctor! How hard is it to get another one? Bet if you called/e-mailed Dr. Phil's show he could get the best of the best to sort it all out as long as you are prepared to be a "guest"?! Still sending love out to ya!

Might be worth getting the financial help and relief of finally getting a good Doc to email Dr. Phil through his site. I wouldn't bank on it but it's worth a try. Maybe email him, write him a snail-mail letter, and then continue emailinbg every day to let him know how hard it was on that day to try to keep up with it *by yourself*. I wish I could give you a day off from it, I could come wash things or something at least. Too bad we all don't live nearer one another. My love to you! Hang in there and just keep pushing and pushing for better answers. I know it's tiring dealing w/ all the Dr.'s and then esp. the insurance co.'s, on top of your children's condition. Could you get your ins. to pay for an infectious disease doc somewhere else, and pay for the gas to travel, since your area is what they might call "medically underserved" for this particular condition? Sassy_C, the lady that was on the Dr. Phil show had some type of skin lesions too with her MRSA. Does it just infect even small things (ingrown hairs, hangnails, etc.) easily? PC, I hope you can find someone who offers more definate treatment soon!

PC, I caught the tail end of a news report on ABC last might where they were talking about a new treatment for severe cases of eczema and psoriasis (I know these are separate problems), but the gist of it was they were using lasers to treat and getting some very good results. I know right now you are more worried about the MRSA, but thought I would tell you about the news piece I heard. You might be able to check out ABC's web site and find more and the full report. I can't imagine how frustrated you are and how tired, will keep you and your family in my prayers!

Oh ya, forgot to mention my logic behind bugging Dr. Phil so much: As my dad always says, the squeaky wheel gets greased.

That's a good question....but I'm almost 100% certain that MRSA only preys on open wounds infecting them and DOES NOT cause bumps/pimples etc unless there is a root of entry. (ie some kind of opening/break in the skin) Gosh, someone correct me if I'm wrong....but I work with some very sick people that contract MRSA and have totally infected wounds (big ones) and I've never seen a MRSA caused pimple, bump or boil! Even in patients that are immunocompromised from cancer or organ transplant. Thus far the best way to prevent the spread of MRSA is good hand washing! So if you are worried, get some waterless hand cleanser for your purse and use it everywhere!

RTP...you have a good point about Dr. Phil! If PC doesn't mind appearing on the show or them filming in her home, it might be a good way to get treatment. He is always good about helping children and PC has done just about everything you can think of. You know he has lots of contacts and could probably get a top specialist involved and either get the specialist to donate treatment or the Dr. Phil show pay for it just for the story.
Heck, I'd write a letter to Barack O'Bama and see if something couldn't be done. It would highlight during an election year how dismal our health care systems can be and also how different the health care might be in a smaller community! And I bet he's always looking for good press.
I am assuming PC that you live in a small town and are limited in choices?

oh - I'm not interested in Dr Phil I'm just too tired right now.
Sassy, MRSA is causing pimples, boils, cellulitis, and of course the more dangerous flesh-eating infections - on healthy people with no open wounds. That's why the doctors are all confused and nobody knows how to take this. All it takes is skin-to-skin contact. They don't know why some people are immune (like me) and some people break out with these types of skin infections on contact.
It's a crazy issue and I don't have any answers, but I'm just trying to carry on.

I think the suggestion to contact your local health department is a good one. I'd do it. They should have lots of info for you.
