My son starts Kindergarten on Monday (sniff, sniff) and he will be going all day. There are still some Kindergarten classes in our school district that are only doing the half day thing. So can anyone tell me what they do in full day Kindergarten that is different from the half day?

Hey FF! In our district, our 1/2 day provides a "day care" with unstructured activity the second half of the day if the moms don't pick up their kids. I don't think that content is different, the other time in a full day is filled with recess, lunch and free-play in the classroom. I think the big "push" for full day kindergarten is the fact that most kids have spent time either in preschool or day care, so the adjustment is not as great. Also I know this is hard to believe, but there are some districts in our area that actually do standardized testing in kindergarten! Sick I was definitely shocked at how much more structured kindergarten was for my DD. She was expected to be able to count to 100 by Christmas, they were writing in journals and even doing really basic math INCLUDING addition and subtraction. Sigh. A far cry from Captain Kangaroo and naps on a mat.

He won't have any problems then. He can already count to 100, he is reading and he can do some basic math. With all of my health problems I could never do alot of physical stuff with him, so we always did workbooks, flash cards, reading, etc. He's definitely ready to go!

We go to a private school. So 1/2 day K would make us have to pick up siblings at different times of the day. So ours started right in with full day K. They were both fine. I think my girl would come home every day for the first week and just pass out asleep, but she adjusted pretty quickly!

well this really scares me. My kid's going to kindergarten next fall, and she sure as heck can't count past 10 and doesn't even know the whole alphabet.
I wonder if I'm just an uncredible slacker. No preschool for us....I worry that the preschool kids are all so far ahead..

When my youngest started kindergarten (my Army Soldier), he had the advantage of going to a teaching preschool. Not only did he know how to count, add and subtract, he also knew all the names of the dinosaur, when they lived and how they ate (meat or plant). Having a brother start school a year earlier than him was also a big plus, I had to give him reading or math problems to do while his brother did his homework.

Both of my kids attended full day kindergarten. They learned so much with a full day. By march they were both reading. The full day allows the teacher to accomplish more. Most kids I know did well, and a bonus was they slept great at night. JMHO

PC lawdy! You are NOT a slacker mom! My son JUST started drawing pictures that were slightly recognizable...I just kept thinking, "If only they'd let him use poop from a diaper at school, then they'd know his true creative abilities!" Ahhhh, the joys of comparative parenthood. You know, all the pressure at school is exactly why I don't have my kids in structured activities after school. When do kids just get to learn how to PLAY?

Yeah, PC, don't worry too much about keeping up in K. That is the purpose of Kindergarten, to get them ready for school. They all catch up to each other by the end of 1st grade.

PC, You are definitely not a slacker! He was going to daycare twice a week and he learned a lot there too.

I'm late to chime in...however...You are not a slacker! My four year old cannot sing the "ABC's" recognise or write any letters. He went to daycare/pre-school! He started school this year and with only one week of school I've noticed better speech and a maturity he didn't have before! I'm completely confident he will learn as will your child! Every child learns at their own rate! My daughter just started grade two and she can easily read the Harry Potter books (first three so far). She's always been interested in learning...my son..not so much, but I know it will happen with time!

Sassy_C is right.... Kids at that age learn very fast.... kindergarten is a very important learning year!! My daughter just started 1st grade, it is tough... spelling and math tests every week... handwriting is graded... plus computer lab, art, music, PE, social living... homework every night!! Crazy!! School is not what it used to be!!
