Kids and renovations are my life!

« on: March 30, 2007, 04:09:28 PM »

So here's what happening....
My daughter who is six needs to have surgery (nothing major, just an umbilical hernia from birth being repaired) and she's scared...(rightly so)
I was hoping that you guys would have some words of wisdom to help me calm her fears...We've talked about the surgery and that she will be asleep and won't feel anything. She's most afraid of the IV before she's asleep.
Also any suggestions for after the surgery (it's day surgery so she'll be home later that day)...I want to make it special, food treat's will be out of the question (I don't like cleaning up barf giggle)....

Perhaps you've been there and can give me some suggestions!

Thanks in advance.... bighug

My son has his tonsils out when he was about 6 years old.  He was pretty scared too.  I found DISTRACTION the key to calming his nerves.  We got a bunch of those Eye Spy books where you find things in the photographs. It passed the time with a game that he and mom could play and really did take his  mind off of the upcoming surgery.

I was fortunate in that the hospital here has a branch for children.  When they were ready to prep him, they took his photo, made  him a "DRIVER'S License valid only in the hospital, and then let him drive a fisher price jeep back to the prep room.  OMG.  It was so cute.

Does your place calm them with a little gas prior to the IV? Ours did, and he was fine.

Oh, this is going to be so hard on you.  I've been there, done that.  When my youngest daughter was very sick with pneumonia and got her IV, she didn't even flinch--that's how ill she was.  She was 6 at the time.  But when my oldest daughter got an IV when she broke her leg and had to go in for surgery, she is a HUGE baby and screamed and cried.  She was 10 at that time.  The hospital had a spray to help numb the area but it doesn't take all of the pain away.

My advice to you would be have her not watch when they put the IV in, and you hold her hand on the other side of the bed and look in her eyes and talk to her to distract her.  Tell her she's going to feel a big pinch but it won't last long.  Hopefully the hospital will have an IV team who specializes in IVs for everyone.

Big hugs to your daughter.  Please let us know how her surgery goes.

I think Distraction is the key for little ones.  Keep their mind off of it, and it will be over before they know it.  My son also had to have a sinus lavage - the prep team kept beanie babies to give to the kids right before they started the iv.  Again, distract 'em.

I can really sympathize with the fear of little children.  My daughter broke her arm when she was 6.  We had to wait all day for the pediatric orthopedist to be able to put it in a cast.  When the time came, she absolutely refused to let them give her a shot for pain - she let them manipulate her bones back into place without pain killers.  She was that afraid of the shot.  Mom, on the other hand, was passing out and the docs had to find a place for me to lie down.   I felt terrible because I was no help for my daughter.

Because of her fear of needles, though, I know if she ever had to have an IV, we'll have a tough time.  She is very resistant.  Two nurses had to hold her down the last time she did get a shot.

We'll keep you in our thoughts and hope all goes smoothly!

Okay...things are a bit calmer here tonight! My daughter is okay with having the surgery she just doesn't want the needle (IV)...we bought her two special movies for after and some Jello for breakfast (her surgery is at 2:00pm) so she's actually excited! I'll go with that! I bought an organic gardening magazine to pass the time while she's in ...so I'll let you know how it goes!

Thanks for all the love and positive energy! Karma for everyone above! :bskt
