Here's the situation.  My dd will be 4 in June and has never come out of her room on her own once we put her to bed for a nap or bedtime.  She will just sit in her room and play until we come get her once she wakes up.  Or she will call for me or my hubby too.  But she has never opened her door to come out and we always liked that because we haven't had to be worried about her wandering the house at night.  We are thinking that she is getting old enough that she should start learning appropriate times to come out by herself.

We just converted my son's crib to a toddler bed and he has been doing good but he comes out when he is done sleeping.  He is 2.  My daughter hasn't noticed yet that he is doing this by himself yet but I know she will soon and I want to help her know what times she can leave her room and when she can't without confusing her.

How have you other moms dealt with this?  How do I explain to her (and my son) that sometimes it's a good thing and sometimes it's naughty?

I have a dd who's 4 and a son who's 2, so I can relate.

You can't really explain why sometimes it's okay and sometimes it's not. But here's what I do. I have a 2-story house, so at night once thekids are in bed, I put a baby gate at the top of the stairs. Then I set up their breakfast table for the morning (I actually keep a mini-fridge in my closet, for their breakfast because I don't want to have to go downstairs in the morning - I have a 4 month old baby who has to nurse, etc)

Then when they wake up they come out, and I put their milk and stuff on their little table. Then I take my time feeding the baby and getting ready, so I don't have to worry about them running all over the house.

It's the only way I've been able to manage.

Your dd sounds very compliant - that's not a bad thing, really. Have you tried just telling her "When you wake up, come and get me"?
