I lived in Alaska for about a year and there are two things I remember well about the food (and it's all good):
1. During the summer, it seems like all the adult males in the state are either fishing for salmon or in the process of smoking salmon. And then SOMEONE has to eat all that salmon. There was a period of several months that I probably ate smoked salmon every day. When I moved back to the Lower 48 I couldn't even LOOK at salmon for about 3-4 years (too much of a good thing and all of that). I've gotten over that now!
2. Moose is a very versatile meat. Turns out it works very well in Mexican food, too. Moose tacos, moose burritos, etc.
Lol, so true! I caught 2 HUGE halibut a couple summers ago and we're just now down to the last 2 pieces of it in the freezer. Ugh.
Some friends melted my metal oven racks trying to smoke salmon in a homemade smoker last summer - he made it out of 1' square wooden beams...

Perhaps too much beer while fishing?

Yes, years that you only catch one kind of meat are boring. One year my dad only caught bear - blech. Bear'n'beans, bear lasagna, bear potpie, fried bear, bear burgers, etc... I'd trade it for salmon anyday - but I say that while eating bear meat, haha. Ptarmagins (sp?) are OK for making roast "duck" or fried "chicken" too. But if I have to deal with that kind of mess I prefer to get a good quantity of meat to make it worth it. Ptarmagins are small for the mess they involve.
